This is a wonderful razor Robin. Great pics.
I imagine to insert the blade you merely press the handle sides in rather like forceps. Very straight forward design and well machined apparently. It seems to be in very nice shape.
The balsa apparatus - appears to make a good holder and its great to hear you are getting good shaves. Nice job Robin.

Thanks, Wayne. You actually pry the handle apart. It is pure genius. No moving parts, no problems. It is just a piece of stainless steel (for spring loading), and a blade. It does not get any simpler than that. Hence, I presume, the name.
The balsa blade holder is also ingenious. I am afraid the shop went out of business years ago, but making your own should be fairly straightforward. The idea is to hold the blade (SE wedge or cutthroat) steady while cleaning it.

Wow Robin! That is a beautiful and elegant razor - how well does it shave? My experience of the Rolls and Empire hollow ground blades in a safety razor is that it's about as good as it gets...

Thank you, Marcus. In a "stranded on an island" scenario, it would be the razor to bring, given that I were also allowed to bring a three face paddle strop. Apparently, it required the usual "mild abrasive + leather" treatment. Bring in ferric or chromium oxide, and the blade should hold for decades, if not centuries.

I don't know whether it is plated at all. My guess would be polished stainless steel, but I am no expert in steel.

It is a very original machine in its design and will see robust. Enjoy it!

I love the simplicity of the design. If I'm right, it looks like the pressure from your fingers holding the razor actually acts to help keep the blade in place although I suspect that the resistance from the razor 'spring' is more than enough by itself. Clean, elegant, not over engineered, this is a real economy of motion razor. I love it!

Thre pressure from the razor's spring is more than sufficient. As I said, you open it by prying it apart, so putting pressure on it with your fingers will achieve exactly nothing. The design is so simple that one has to wonder why anyone ever bothered to implement little screws, springs, and other contraptions.

I think that's the real beauty of it. No moving parts, no complex mechanisms to go wrong. Form and function with minimal fuss, actually with no fuss at all. There's absolutely nothing to go wrong with this razor, properly maintained it should last several lifetimes. Just how rare are they?

I have no idea how rare they are. Judging from what is available on the interwebs, I would say extremely. We found one by accident, then started looking and found another within a week. Since then, silence. But there should be some around in Sweden still.

What a super look to it. I too like Bauhaus design and Deco. And that area of Sweden has sure produced some great steel so like you I beleve they're there just waiting to come to light again. Also did you ever find a blade bank? I do have my eye out. Enjoy
