Judging from the colour, it comes from a planet where men are men and sheep are scared.

That'll be Planet DDR, then Actually, yes ... it is German, prior to re-unification. It's a Golf and the same logo as the Golf of old which was made in Leipzig and Berlin (according to Waits). The spine even carries some simple instruction: SPANNEN <> OFFNEN Who knows? It might just work ...

Of late I've been infatuated with the Shake Sharp, which is a American single edge razor from the 1940's that uses a DE blade. I'm using up my residual cache of Shark blades. It's aggressive and gives a sweet, long-lasting shave. It has, however, contributed to scary irritation at the base of my neck. I'm working that out.
Now I've got to find me a Golf.

A Golf? Wow, you learn something new everyday. That Golf looks like what would happen if a Gem Contour and a Crayola had a child!

... and with that analogy you're not far off the mark. Kudos to those colourful Commies I have shaved with it. I dropped a Gillette Super Thin in there and off I went. I used a transparent, brushless cream and could clearly see that it was doing a great job. The angle is fine, but easy to find. Like a Contour (or a Tech) it seemed to work well with a sharp blade, taking some of the danger away and allowing quite a bit of pressure to gain a really super-smooth shave. Unlike the Contour, the angle was easy to find and maintain. Blow me down! It's a good 'un ... ... but, we'll have to leave the SE Gods to decide if this one is in or out for further discussion. It's certainly a curious one and yes, that Shake Sharp is a similar one, Kevin.

Marvelous find Paul. If I remember correctly , even Gillette advertised their blades as having 5(?) per side. But it sure opens up blade chices. If you can try a Voskhod blade. St. Pete's blades are sharp. I used to use them in my slants. Thanks for the the share and grins.

I should also add it carries the rasping sound well through the razor ... not quite, but almost like the 1912.

I take it "the Gods" approve? There was some thunder when Marcus dropped a DE blade into his 1912 ... Yeah, it's a lot of fun. In so many ways it's just like a GEM Contour, just more forgiving and really tames that ludicrous sharpness you get with DE blades. It felt like an SE shave and just a few hours later, that light re-growth feels like SE shaved re-growth. Over on another forum, a chap has labelled this a "G71". I don't (yet) know how or where he got that designation from, but he refers to his as a "not quite white" handled version.

Thanks for the review of the Golf razor. Just as I suspected it does have similarities to a Contour. With this razor I would quickly test it with my favorite Personna Labs. Indeed this is a nice and unique razor.

Interesting, but one of the reasons I like SE so much is because of the much stiffer blade. Does it feel like a DE or SE in use?

... more like an SE in use. The actual blade exposure is slight with a good sized gap. In context, the exposure on a DE ... even something like a Gillette Tech would be twice this, if not more. So, in use the cap stiffens the blade.
