Just picked up an aluminium cased Imperial: I knew about the silver, nickel and stainless Imperials Nos. 1,2 and 3, the gold one and the aluminium Viscount but I didn't know they ever made an aluminium Imperial. The handle is aluminium too like the Viscount and the blade's dated 1951. Anybody have any more information on these?

That would appear to be a really interesting catch!
Waits carries nothing on the matter, even after I figured out the reason for my searching "aluminium" turned up nothing.

Yes at first glance I thought it was a Viscount. Wikipedia makes a fleeting reference to the aluminium Imperial but with no concrete information. Very interesting...

There were at least a couple of Imperial models in aluminum into the 1950s.
Check Tom Willard's site as he has a terrific collection of stropper razors.
For some reason the links here are not functioning for me right now, but you can see the 1950s Alligator Cased Aluminum Imperial at
stropper.com and search for Rolls. Poke around. He has plenty of models to enjoy!

Good call rocketman! I love stropper.com - looked up Darwin, Allegro and Ronson while I was there too Although I prefer the heavier steel handle of the other models, these aluninium cases just look and feel so cool. And the strop, hone and blade of this set are all in great condition too.

Yes I agree that the aluminum has wonderful aesthetic and feel. I had read an opinion some years ago to make sure you get a steel case for honing and the writer suggested the aluminum case was not as sturdy a stropping mechanism as the steel, but I haven't found that to be the case for me. I really see no difference regarding the usability.
They polish up great too!

Try a magnet Marcus. The SS might not be magnetic (are there SS alloys that attract a magnet?) , if the nickeled case is plated steel it will attract the magnet.

....and I'm a bit embarassed to ask this, but how can I tell the diffetence between the stainless steel and nickel cases? Good question. The stainless cases have the number 3 on them, rather than 2 (nickel) or 1 (silver) - they were sold as the Rolls Razor Imperial No. 3 Stainless.
