Shave four was the same.
I took some of the soap and grated it into a jar. Over the course of the day I added small amounts of water and some glycerine. Once I was satisfied with the texture I packed it into a glass bowl. It ended up slightly softer than Proraso in a tub and I should be able to just soak my brush and load from the bowl tomorrow.
Soaking the hunk of soap was wasting a good amount since it just poured off with the water like soft soap. I should have added some essential oil. Oh well, another experiment for later on.

Shave five with my reformulated soap from the above post. Well, I needed much more loaded on the brush to reach the same lather. Also, I cant tell any difference with the glycerin. My skin felt no better and no worse.

Shaved again today with my reformulated soap. It is crap. I'll use it to wash my hands but tomorrow its back to the plain laundry bar.
My reformulated soap loads fine and makes a nice lather but drys on my face too fast. No amount of loading or water solves this. After the first pass I have to reload the brush to get more lather. Maybe the glycerin is drying it??
On the brighter side the reformulated soap makes a pretty good Creamo equivalent. Slather it on by hand and just keep adding water each "pass". Lol, I didn't say it doesn't shave well just that its crap at lathering.

Thursdays shave was back to the plain laundry bar. Everything went well with good lather and no razor burn/irritation.
I will say I'm looking forward to my end of this weeks shaving experiment. Im not sick of it or the smell but it is really an in your face scent. Way more citronella than William's but on the bright side it doesn't linger.

My dad used to complain that his mother never bought any soap for the home other than Sunlight (I think) bar laundry soap. They used it for everything. The whole family. Bathing, washing hair, and shaving too. Well his dad anyway. So I guess it can be done. Some folks will argue a shaving soap needs bentonite or a clay, and perhaps glycerin to add cushion and slip. But Willaiams has none of that stuff. Your laundry soap sounds similar. It is great to see the experimentation. I tried a few hand soaps but they were too thin for me and didn't last long on the skin before sort of disappearing or shrinking away. I haven't tried for a long time.
Great read. Thnx!
I'm disappointed though to hear what they're up to on the froufrou sites. I was just planning to launch my very own hand hammered monkey gland artisan soap! I was going to call it Taylor's of Old Monkey Nuts. But now?? Sheesh. Beaten to the gate again! : )

Final day of the experiment and everything worked out. Can't say that at this point I even look at this soap as a laundry bar anymore, although I have a pair of jeans that need a good hand scrub.
I'm going to shave with a full on "shaving soap" tomorrow, one of my favorites Barrister & Mann Lavinille, and then see how much I'm missing. Or not missing. I'll give my final thoughts tomorrow.
RocketMan, by all means make the Taylor's Monkey Gland with my blessing. I want to try it. I think I'll market mine to the Duck Dynasty crowd. PalmettoMan's Save Soap and Catfish Lure! Someone will buy it, they buy freaking Si and Willie bobbleheads.

Greetings, gentlemen. I'm sorry it took me this long to finish what I started. I had a death in the family. Who knew there was so much to be done when someone dies, even if everything is in order.
I kind of lost my train of thought for this experiment but I'll do my best.
Where do I stand on Zote laundry soap as a shave soap? My opinion is that it makes a perfectly serviceable shave soap. I would even go so far as to say it is a good solid performer that goes beyond just being some soap that could be shaved with.
Throughout this experience I kept looking at William's soap for comparison and in the end they are the same and very different. Williams is a more subdued scent and needs a fair amount of loading to lather. Zote on the other hand, is a citronella bomb that takes very little to lather comparatively. Another thing with the Zote is that, for me, it need to be pre soaked to load sufficiently. Without soaking I struggled to load enough for more than one pass.
During the shave the Zote provided ample cushion and glide without clogging or proving hard rinse clean. Afterwards I experienced no more or less irritations than any other soap I enjoy. I had no dryness or redness caused by it nor any breakouts.
I will say warm water is a must for the rinse. Cold water didn't prove effective in rinsing clean, although I will say with every soap I try and remove any leftover residue. Perhaps I have missed out on some moisturizing provided by shave soaps?
In the end, I guess it all depends on what you enjoy in a soap. I say enjoy, because I genuinely did enjoy shaving with this soap. Is it right for everyone? No, its too simple, there are those who want complex scent and formulations. I can say for myself I will be keeping it in my rotation and will probably buy more. I know I will get bored with it, indeed at the end of a week I couldn't wait to be done but it was good.
I say go and try it for yourself. It is dirt cheap after all. I should have some left over that I'd be willing to send to anyone who can't find it locally In the US, it would probably be cheaper than the postage to find it locally. Send me a PM if there are any takers US or abroad.
Again folk, sorry for the lackluster wrap up. I just haven't gotten my brain back to working order. If anyone has questions I'll try to answer them.

Sorry for your loss. Thank You for the write up. I am going to get some of this and maybe use it as a travel soap. I like the idea of having more then one soap. If this got lost it would not matter. I like simple by the way.
