This will be a recurring thread which I will update posting estimates of the number of uses a soap will be expected to last. I will not use all of these soaps to the end to arrive to these estimates just basic math. If anyone else has a scale (that measures grams), please join me in contributing to a comprehensive list of soaps. As the list grows larger I will also rank the soaps by their cost effectiveness per use. I have seen members of other forums post by weight cost effectiveness but that is inaccurate as soft soaps will not last. Here are soaps in my possession, that I have so far tested: - Catie's Bubbles La Rose du Mechant-- 133 uses per 8oz. (($0.15 per use)){Plisson Synthetic}
- Provence Sante- 100 uses per 3.5oz (($0.07 per use)){Plisson Synthetic}
- Pre de Provence-214 uses per 5.25oz (($.07 per use)) {22mm/54mm badger brush}

An interesting approach. I do, however, see one significant challenge: How is this to get objective if you do not use standardised brushes and water of uniform hardness? I am not nitpicking here. I have brushes that range from 18-36mm, and have used twice as much product in different water conditions.

That sounds like something you would say. My purpose is to give an estimate that will apply to all people. I will average out the estimates other people give. So far I have conducted these tests with a Plisson synthetic and it would be interesting to see what kind of soap consumption each of my brushes will get: synthetic, badger, and boar. I will list the estimates for each brush.

Well, I can tell you my decidedly unscientific time spent trying to use up a few soaps. I tried 2 twice to use some soaps to nothingness out of my cabinet. I don't remember how many were in the first batch, but I finally wound up using them in the shower.
The second batch consisted of 5 soaps and I would rotate through them, on Sunday I had my pick of the entire cabinet. All of that was done to prevent boredom. Boredom is why the first attempt failed. Anyway, I stuck to it for almost a year, at which time they began running out. Soap lasts an extremely long time. Much longer it seems when the goal is specifically to use it completely.
Based on that I decided I had enough soap for many years, probably enough to get me into my years where I'll be too weak or shaky to ever use a razor on myself.

Update posted. I have finished testing Provence Sante. 100 uses per 3.5oz. Compare that to Catie's Bubbles at 133uses for 8oz. It is a very soft almost cream like soap so I am not surprised though Provence Sante isn't exactly the hardest. I can only dream what a triple milled super hard soap such as Pre de Provence will last.
Anyways Provence Sante is clearly the better value when it costs $7-10 while CB costs $20. Even though CB is a very good soap I like PS better anyways and the value is an added bonus.

Sharpspine already tested the longevity with his hard water and hyper extended loading times he requires. Hopefully he'll see this.

I have completed testing Pre de Provence with a silvertip badger brush at 22mm/54mm it has an estimated duration of 214 shaves. Bringing the cost per use to $0.07 per use-- the same as Provence Sante. I did however use, a badger brush for this particular soap. I will go over Provence Sante with the badger-- the cost per use should rise with the badger.
I am feeling like using my boars so I am going to test the Catie's Bubbles again but this time with a Semogue 830. Starting weight is at 177g. I predict the already high cost of $.15 will go through the roof. Boars are cheap initially but you pay in the long run.

I quote Robin ( RobinK) ... how goes standardization in this test? Do you use the same brush for all that rush? Everyday ... for all those days ... just one soap and one brush? WOWWW, It's actually remarkable!! Interesting is the point of view about know of the brush about the hair. I had never the heart to start the same epic journey. But I had a different idea. To fraction the new puck into four and use each with a different brush I have, representative of a category: • Omega 10077 Boar 22x50mm • Vie-Long BG12925 Horse 24x52mm • Liojuny Tampa Finest 2-band 23x54mm • The Grooming Co. Synth 4gen 24x52mm Maybe I'll do with nest Meissner Tremonia hard soap.

I'll have to pull out my stats on MdC in my hard water with an UltraLather technique. I was somewhere in the 130+ range.
