This set comes with a corduroy pouch, strop paste in a bakelite pot,two blades and a bakelite blade case. The set had one previous owner (God rest his soul) from new and was barely used. It's still unclear how Rolls managed to make and sell a razor for 30 years that simply wasn't sharp enough and that everyone discarded after using once. So this was the ideal set to experiment with - I pasted the strop with the OEM paste and rather than hone the almost unused blades externally I honed the first one in the case after soaking the hone in petroleum jelly over night. The result was just as good as using the lapping film. So paste the strop, soak the hone in vaseline and you're good to go! C'mon, give it a go...

Beautiful set!
One day I'll break down and buy a Rolls, it looks like sooner rather than later. It's just money, who needs that. Lol

The key to buying a Rolls, Billy, is to ensure that the blade is good without defects on the edge. That, and an intact hone, which are often cracked. There are many NOS examples of these that come onto eBay ever year, so pitching in for a new one, or at least a very little used one is the right place. They are a must in every shaving enthusiast's collection. Meanwhile: ... jump on to about 27 minutes. Enjoy

Wow that's one minty puppy! I don't have a Rolls but if I did I wish it were that minty! Congratulations!

Thanks guys - it gives an amazing shave And I have an open offer to all members of this forum worldwide that I will hone anybody's Rolls blade(s) to shave readiness in exchange for some carbon SE blades and return postage. So now there's no excuse not to get one! Honestly, the Rolls experience with a sharp blade gives a shave that just can't be had any other way. And it's just so much fun

So paste the strop, soak the hone in vaseline and you're good to go! C'mon, give it a go... This notion of soaking the hone has flown right by me. What the heck??? Do you smear it all over or liquefy it or??? And what is the logic/rationale behind it? It is good to hear it works for you. But why the Vaseline?

I just smear the petroleum jelly over the hone and let it soak in for 24hrs then wipe off the excess. The original suggestion for barber hones by their manufacturers was to heat the jelly up to liquefy it and then soak them. The idea is that the jelly increases both the fineness and speed of synthetic hones and it's worked turning the normally useless Rolls OEM hone into an efficient blade sharpener. I'm very interested to hear what results others get with this method.

Here's some instruction on the back of a straight razor hone I sold on recently ... ... funnily enough in the evening after we'd been to Trafford Park, Manchester (Shopping Centre) during the day, to a chap who used to supply silicon carbide to Trafford Park, Manchester (when it was a factory area) in a jiffy bag whose old postage labels showed it had been posted from Trafford Park, Manchester (Offices area). There is order to the universe ... the hone was made at Trafford Park, Manchester in case you can't read upside down.

I recently paid out the nose for a simple cotton blanket. It happened to be made in the mill where my grandfather, two grandmothers, and numerous other kin had worked. The mill is gone now. Heck, an entire town is gone, people in Manhattan and Los Angeles knew where it was, but no more.

After seeing the carborundum photo ( thx PJGH) I vaguely recall this Vaseline thing now. ( this getting older thing.....yikes)
I definitely never tried it though. I'm going to find an opportunity soon to prep a Rolls hone and give it a try. It has been a while anyway and I do like shaving with the razor. This will be a first for me as I have never gone near any of my hones with oil. I have a few Rolls kicking about though and I can isolate one for petroleum products.
Thnx guys! I'll let you know how it goes.
And sweet Rolls Marcus.
