Does anyone know the dimensions of the strop for a Valet razor? More specifically, I'm interested in the thickness. I'm looking into making one as every set with a strop has eluded me when I try to buy.

My digital caliper reveals that the Auto-Strop strops that I use average around .055" or 1.4 mm for you metric guys.
Interestingly, the tip of the never-opened strop on my VC4 is a little thinner at .050". This could be due to repeated applications of Lubriderm and FeOx/mineral oil causing the strops to swell. Or, the printing on the strop wrapper says that it is "improved" so possibly they made it thinner.
I also have an unbranded strop that I acquired somewhere that is the same size as the Auto-Strop strops but slightly thicker at around .065". This does not work as well as the Auto-Strop strops in the Auto-Strop or in a Damaskeene stropper, giving some resistance as the razor (or stropper) is moved back and forth.
So, something between .050" and .055" should be just right.

PM, are you going to strop blades? Or is this just for kicks?

Thanks for measurements Spidey! Off to the internets.
Brian, I plan on stropping for the heck of it. I have a few boxes of original blades. The ones in the beat up boxes aren't going to win any awards as collectables. The two I've used were good but seem like they could use just a little push to be great.

So, from some internet searching on that thickness of leather, I came to the conclusion that I need 3 1/2oz leather. Now, anyone have a suggestion as to what kind? Finish, grain, animal, etc.? I'm not putting much effort into this. If it works I'll make a pretty one.
I've only seen pics and held a desicated old strop. Should I be looking to make one side pasted and the other naked leather? Or just a pasted strop?
