I got my first synthetic brush a couple of years ago. Now I have about a dozen of them and never use anything else. I have a very nice Rooney silvertip that collects dust on a shelf.
There is definitely a learning curve with synthetics but once mastered they are lather producing monsters. I found that even soaps that previously gave me problems lather like crazy with a synthetic brush.
I think I could work up a decent lather with a synthetic brush and a damp rock.

Day 9 of nothing but the #137. I spent last week with shave sticks. This brush loves loves loves them, This week is creams. All face lathered so far. Yesterday the Rose of Bulgaria shined, today it was Palmolive old formula. The Ace Synthetic knot is doing really well on these too, Tomorrow I may pull out the dirty bird scuttle and some TOBS or Proraso red.

Day 12 and the JR #137 shined with the older Williams. I am going to abandon the rest or cream week and use whatever hits me. I am starting to learn this brush.
