New Years's Eve bonus: Drama at the Mesquita residence - from the New York Times January 25, 1929
Maid Knocked Out Twice Battling Burglars; Her Cries Rout Thugs in Uptown Home
Miss Anna Ettel, 26 years old, housemaid for Julius Mesquita, the head of the Gem Razor Company, at his apartment at 168 West Eightysixth Street, was injured yesterday afternoon by two burglars who finally escaped with a small quantity of silverware. In the course of the battle with the robbers she was twice knocked unconscious.
She was alone in the apartment when a man, who said he was a “Mr. Smith,” appeared and wished to take measurements for new curtains. She declined to admit him into the house and he departed. Five minutes later two other men arrived and asked for “Mr. Smith,” saying they had been sent to help with the measurements. They persuaded the girl to call Mrs. Mesquita on the telephone and see whether they were not expected.
As the girl turned toward the telephone one of the men struck her over the head with a blackjack : the other struck her in the face with his fist. She fell unconscious while the robbers pushed on into the bedroom. Regaining consciousness a moment later, she followed them and attempted to fight. They struck her once more, bound and gagged her and threw her into the bathroom.
Again she regained consciousness and was able to remove her bonds. She opened the window and called for help. Maurice O'Shea of 70 West 107th Street was working on an incompleted building across the street and heard her. He hurried to the street, found Patrolman Christian of the West Sixty-eight Street station and both of them rushed up to the Mesquita apartment on the ninth floor. When they reached the scene the door was open and the fugitives gone. With them went a small quantity of jewelery—just how much the police did not reveal.
Miss Ettel was treated for her injuries by Dr. Flaherty of Knickerbocker Hospital.
