Man, I do love me some Williams! My Cliffs Notes on creating a lather: 1. Big boar brush w/good backbone 2. Load HEAVILY in a confined shaving mug (my Williams is kept in a Seaforth mug) 3. Apply generously to face; should be quite pasty 4. Dip tip of brush in hot sink water a few times to add moisture & perfect the lather 5. Enjoy a bang-up shave On point 2 What exactly is a confined shaving mug? A cup or a bowl to load on? I have my Williams in a simple coffee cup. I like to use a shaving mug that's very close in diameter to the Williams puck. Seaforth or Old Spice mugs fit the bill well. For me, a bowl is too big and unwieldy for hard pucks.

pisces0, next time I use Williams, I will be sure to show the cup. Also, I need to change cups, almost lathered my coffee and drank my Williams.

I never have issues creating lather with any soap. MWF or even beloved William's. Just load up a paste, apply, add a little water at a times till consistency that you enjoy is reached. Granted Williams doesn't always reach that "voluminous puff of clouds peaked" state but it does what it's supposed to do. Protect, give glide for the blade. So even if it's a little flat but still does the job, it works.

I couldn't wait for Williams Wednesday, so I broke out the Williams for today's shave. All joking and kidding aside, I'll admit to being a little nervous about my first use. When I first started wet shaving, I saw a few negative comments on Williams. On top of that, it seemed that most folks who are fans of Williams seem to be using boar or badger brushes -- as a synth-only user, I wasn't sure how the soft bristles and lighter backboned of my brushes would work. Fast forward to today. I used this thread's advice, as well as the instructions provided by the videos from Fuzzy and OS, and got an extremely slick and protective lather. I wet my brush, shook out the excess, and proceeded to load the brush by "beating the Williams like it owed me money"....after a solid 30 seconds, I had a heavy load on the brush and lather appearing in the container. I decide to load even a little more, despite already having a good brush full, and then on to the face lathering. I face lathered as I would any of my other soaps. The final lather was easy to whip up on my face, and I had a really great shave. Things I really liked: - The Williams scent -- it's a light, clean scent with a nice slight floral undertone
- The slickness -- it's the slickest soap I've ever used. I actually had to use the alum block on my finger tips to be able to do my skin stretching during the shave. Even when the lather was gone, a little water and my skin was more than slick enough to accommodate the razor
- Ease of use -- I don't know why some people have issues; I found this to be a really easy and straightforward soap to lather.
Things I didn't like: I got nothing....no complaints at all. Williams will always have a place in my shave den from here on out!

Awesome ! Congratulations. You've been initiated in the 0.0000001% of Earth's population who can lather Williams and shave with a Micromatic liken a boss !! You've we earned a pat on the back and the knighthood of Sir. Williams ! Errr ! Just don't molest it or any other brick inviting ideas ! Thank you! And frankly, while I've kidded around, I'm way too lazy to bloom or molest any soap...much less something that doesn't require it! I do regret not trying it much earlier in my shave journey, but I'm grateful to ordinaryshaver for sending the puck and encouraging me to give it a try. I like low cost high value items, and Williams fits perfectly into that category. I am perplexed as to why people have problems with Williams -- I am far from an expert-latherer, I tend to be impatient and just want to get to the "razor part" of my shave; so I tend to gravitate to soaps that are super-slick and give great protection without a lot of effort or coaxing. One thing that may work in my favor and against others, is that I don't try for (or even want) "butter cream" or "cool whip" like lather -- again, it has to be slick and it needs to give me that protective barrier, and as a wise man has said, "leave the butter cream for the top of your cakes".

Thats the thing....the "Bottom Line". Williams is one of the easiest soaps I have ever used to get a great lather...
Unless you have hard or soft aater....this stuff, Colgate and Arko are the easiest I've tried...I don't understand so much discussion.

And I hope we don't see a Williams drinker and coffee latherers fan club on here I have a rule now, and there is a reason to it. My rule is this, never use the same color cup for coffee as for Williams. I also instituted another rule, never start my shave til my first cup of coffee is done. Thankfully I was given a Kuerig by the Mrs a few years ago, and it makes a great cup, even the Starbucks stuff.
