People talk all the time about barber shop scented soaps. What does that mean? What are some common soaps? Any other good info on this topic?

Big bucket of worms. Clubman AS to me is the classic barbershop scent. Osage rub...clubman musk..aqua velva ice blue. All of these work for me.

I think it depends on someone's memory of what a barbershop smells like. It could be something unique to an American barbershop or an Italian barbershop or wherever. It could be a combination of different scents like talc, citrus, florals, wood, musk, leather or tobacco. I think the dry down scent of Pinaud Clubman reminds me most of barbershops when I was a kid. If you're buying a barbershop scented soap, you have to look at the makers scent profile to see what they are trying to convey. Everybody is going to be different.

I remember hair tonics from my earliest visits--barber said I was too young for them. Now I shave my head daily and often use Jeris Hair Tonics on my head, Osage Rub is my favorite scent. Wife thinks I'm nuts as I told her they make my hair look and smell nice and keeps it out of my eyes! Half ot the time she is right and the other half I"m wrong- go figure. Life's a bitch and then you die!

Prorasso white reminds me of the hot lather the Italian barbers in NY used on my neck as a kid. Clubman also was at every barber and still is.

They use to make a clear one that I liked more but I have not seen it in a long time now.

To me it all depends on whatever the barber used for his aftershaves. So... that generally means floral, powdery, menthol, spicy and more and a mixture of any and all of those.

Whatever smells like Clubman Original or Clubman Musk will fit the Barbershop Scent discription.
Aqua Velva and Skin Bracer fit the Classic 50's or '60's Shave Cave or Single Guys Rooming House Scent.

My Grandmother owned a couple very nice Gentlemen's Rooming Houses in Roanoke VA. After WWII til 1970.
She had very nice places...You know...the ones were females were not allowed past the front parlour. }8^)) And she ran a very tight ship...and had very nice young businessmen staying there. Some of these guys stayed in touch for years...
As I was growing up, some of these guys taught me how to fish...Stuff like that. I grew up in DC, but spent my Summers with my Grandma in Roanoke...atleast during the '50's early '60's...
Man...after becoming a TOSTer, I copped a bottle of Aqua Velva...BOOM!....Every single one of those cats must of used the AV...cause that scent put me right there! Whew! AV, the smell of 1958, men's rooming house. And thats a great smelling place to! All those guys were upwardly mobile, nice suits, Pontiac convertables, fedoras...and AV!
