Knock $865 off and have the complete set...then we can haggle. It still won't shave any better than any other Autostrop with those awful Feather blades.

Price of silver - about $500/kg. Not a good deal I think.
I can see that Henry Jacques Gaisman spent a lot of time designing this steampunk thing with its useless gears and all. But the Autostrop is too complicated. There is a reason I have only one patent by Gaisman on my web site - those patents waffle on for 10 pages with 5 pages of drawings just to get the point across. And not once does he consider how it shaves. The guard is a mere afterthought. Compare the Autostrop to the 1912 (I smile every time I look at its springs), the Micromatic (the way the cap moves slightly forward when you close it is brilliant) or my new love the Enders Speed (the tongues of the blade bend slightly, it goes click and you're done). They are all simple and elegant. The Autostrop is a monstrosity. Gears? Really? Stirling Silver or not - pass.
For posterity's sake: The (when you read this in 2037) defunct eBay link in the first post is for a solid sterling silver Autostrop without box, blades, blade-holder or strop. For $999.

So you're an Autostrop hater? Gaisman was quite a genius as an mad inventor and very careful to cover all his bases with his patents. He had over 1000 patents for all sorts of things . How do you think he beat out Gillette with the blade patents, forced them to buy out his patents and Autostrop/Probak with it for $20Mil and then he became president of Gillette. You don't like the gears, seem like a great design considering the gears were for the roller guides for the stropper. The only weak spot on the razor is the blade stop hooks, like other SE's they could wear or break off. It's more likely to have a weak spring problem with a 1912 or a mechanical TTO problem with Micromatic. As far as moving parts the Autostrops are solid.

I have three Autostrops and would occasionally use them, but they all take Feather blades only. I'm a Feather blade hater. I also find almost any other SE razor aesthetically more pleasing. Lather catchers, 1912, Enders, Kristy, Butler, Injectors, Rolls, etc... I'm not fond of the 1914 and 1924 because they try to solve a problem that had been solved better in 1912. I like simple and elegant. Gainsman was a genius, no doubt, but he initially did miss the point that stropping blades was not the way forward. I also can't stand his patent writing style. He goes on and on and on and on and on for pages. To make an online version of a patent I have to convert the patent to plain text and then proofread every single word of it. I did one (his first - a shorter one), then I tried another one and lost the will to live. I proofread a Swedish patent once and found it easier going, although I don't speak any Swedish. I don't hate Autostrops, they just don't excite me.

He can't use a modified GEM blade because the 3 razors he owns are the newer models. VB2, VC2, VC3 & VC4 can only use vintage Autostrop blades with the VALET cutouts or the modern Feather FHS-10 blade. A1, A2, B1, B2, VB1, & VC1 use the slide-in blade holder so a modified GEM blade works there.

I'll get some more Micromatics instead, or Enders Speed in all available colours. Or some more lather catchers. Or a Deb in nice condition. Valets, I'm afraid, are near the bottom of my shopping list. Sterling silver ones, without any trimmings, for 1000 dollars, even if they take modified GEMs, are of very little interest to me.

The A1 is the only one I will use, the others I have are just trading stock.
