I've been on a cream kick of late -- I find them really easy to use and a touch faster to lather than most of my soaps -- and since I LOVE Tabac, I figured the cream was a no-brainer. So I picked up a tube and used it for the first time yesterday....it was not quite what I expected:
As to the shave and scent -- they were perfectly fine. In fact, the scent was much stronger than the soap, and 12 hours later I can still smell it on my face, which for me is a plus. The cream was every bit as slick to me as the soap, and the post face feel might even be a bit nicer with the cream than the soap, but it's a marginal difference to me. Keeping in mind that I've only used the cream once, so far I think I prefer the soap over the cream....the cream is fine, I think I just expected a bit more from it.
For those who have and use both, what do you think? Do you notice any differences, do you have a preference -- did I get a bad tube?
- Most creams I've tried have been on the thick-side....usually a toothpaste consistency or even a little thicker. The Tabac cream was so runny that I actually recapped the tube and tried to shake it a bit -- I doubt that did anything, since another squeeze just earned me more runny hand-cream consistency. It appeared like the product had separated a bit inside the tube
. - Typically a little goes a long a way with creams, and since the Tabac soap is a voluminous latherer with a minimal loading of the brush, I figured that a small amount of cream would do the same thing. Not so. I put maybe an inch of cream on a finger and spread it on my cheeks, then did my regular face lather with a dampish (not too wet) synthetic brush. It took some real work (and more water) to bring up the "clown paint" coverage I typically settle for with most soaps, forget about the big cushy lather that I easily get with the Tabac soap. As many probably know, I don't shoot for or even care about "butter cream", basic thin coverage (aka "clown paint") is fine for me; but my other creams (and the Tabac soap) is the rare exception where I usually and inadvertently get that Santa Claus beard of lather.
- This last point is just a nit of an observation, but the color sort of threw me. The soap is milky white, and the cream (before lathering) is yelllow'ish. Not a big deal, but that added with the consistency had me convinced that the tube was bad -- I did some research and found the color is supposed to be yellow/golden.
