I finally had a chance to give a go on re-knotting my ER 150. Since I have been laid up since my back surgery, it felt great being in the shop again. Here is the before picture: I use the red lines to indicate my belief the original 22mm knot was too small. I ordered both 22mm and 24mm from TGN in synthetic. After looking at both knots, I went with the 24mm. I placed the handle in the chuck of my lathe and opened up the opening so the 24 would slide in easily and allow room for glue. I haven't repainted the logo nor have glued in the knot, but I don't think it looks to bad. Not up to Tom's standards, but for my first one, I like it:

As Freddie Prinze would say "loooking goood!" Nice selection on a synthetic knot and post a pic of the final outcome.

Great job PB! Looks 1000 times better with the larger knot. Keep us posted when you get it finished.

Great job PB! Looks 1000 times better with the larger knot. Keep us posted when you get it finished. I used the brush last night. Extremely soft on the face. A few things of note: 1. I have never used a synthetic brush before, so I do not know the proper loading technique. 2. Once full of lather, it will sling lather everywhere (especially on SWMBO's domain). I soaked the brush as I usually do, but it does not retain water like my badgers and boars. Oh well, I really like the shape and I will continue using it this week to get the hang of it.

Rich, as you can see above, it's too late to help poor Tom, I'm afraid he's hooked. However, it's not too late to save yourself. First you need to distance yourself from any temptation. Just send all those brushes you were planning on re-knotting to me, I will dispose of them in a safe manner before anyone else becomes addicted.
Hurry, before it's too late!!

I am sorry one and all, but with the enabling porn pictures that Tom has sent, I feel I have fallen to the addition. Between my love of woodworking and wet shaving, it was an easy, slippery slope.

I blame myself for this........I should have seen the warning signs sooner and maybe we could have saved him. Oh well, we did what we could. Hmmm, I wonder if it's contagious? No, probably just genetic. Anyway got to go, need to go check out the thrift shop as I heard there is a black and white ER 100 there. Yes, I need to go right now. What am I saying? Oh noooooooo.

Rich, try not pre-wetting or soaking any synthetic. They don't need it and IMO don't respond well to it. Try that and let me know how it works for you. FWIW, being an old fart It took me some time to get it into the grey matter to not dip the knot. When I did make the mistake I'd dry the brush off as best I could and put it up to dry for the next day. Once dipped the brush can't be dried out again for use for that shave IMO. Now it's 2nd nature to not dip it, but every once in a while I catch myself about to dip it.
FWIW, using a soap puck pressed into a bowl I put some water directly onto the soap and add water by dipping the very tips of the brush and going back to the bowl to load soap. But it's just the very tips you want to wet and just the briefest of contacts with the water.
Using cream I spread some on my face and after using the brush to further spread it I use the brush the same way.
They aren't the same as a natural fiber brush, that's for sure!

Thanks Brian and Tom for the help on using synthetic brushes. Last night was a bit more successful. I used stick soap and lightly dipped the tips of the brush in the water before working the soap into a lather. I found out that splaying the fibers is very important in developing a good lather. When all said and done, I could have used the remaining lather for 4 to 5 more passes.
