Thanks to Alan, I got the chance to try a Gem Damaskeene razor. It's a pretty thing and feels good in my hand. I probably got the smoothest, kinda close shaves ever with it. By that I mean that the razor was extremely smooth but that was because it didn't cut the stubble much at all. I normally do a 2 pass with touchup shave. With this razor I had to do 3+ passes to get the same results.
Again, I used several different creams/soaps but this didn't seem to make any difference in the shave. It was always smooth and somewhat effective.
For Damaskeene lovers; sorry guys, this is not the one for me.
Next up - a Gem Pushbutton.

That's Blasphemy!! :-)
That's also how you find your Goldilocks razor(s).
The CC Damaskeene isn't my particular cup of tea either. But every once in a while I shave with one.

Oh wow, that's too bad this just proves no matter how great of a reputation a razor has it isn't the best for everyone. Your lucky you only need two passes to clear the old whiskers it takes me 3 with any razor. I hope you really like the Push-Button it doesn't get a lot of love but I won't be surprised if you really like it's performance. Maybe in the future you can get a an OC Damaskeene.

I have never had a problem with the Damaskeene, though the OC is a much closer shave for me than the CC. Sorry it did not work out for you. I put the Damaskeenes in my top 3 of all time best SE shavers. (Streamline/Jewel, Damaskeene, OCMM.)

Yes, it's too mild for me also. I'd try a 24 Goldilocks. Saw one in a nice nickel case for $22, almost got it but I have one already and am trying to downsize.

The Dammy is one of my all time favorites, but with any razor, it is a very individual choice. If the old girl was too smooth for you, try a 1924 Ever Ready razor, aka a shovelhead. Also, note that the angle of use with SE razors is quite different from DEs and even different from ASR's instructions. Audible feedback and cutting efficiency determines the correct angle of use. Try the old Dammy again with a steeper angle to see if that makes a difference.

Greetings
Isn't it strange how the human face could vary so much between individuals and how we all like, and indeed our faces are more suited to some razors than others.
This discussion about the Dammy is just such an example, prior to buying one I was just completely unable to comprehend why the 'Dammy' was any different to any other 1912 and having now got a couple (or three) when you examine them closely they are not so different at all, at least not in a way that they should shave any differently, but they do, at least they do with me. Tiny differences in the head geometry are able to be detected by us and our faces that many sophisticated machines cannot do.
I own a utility brass unplated baton handle GEM 1912, I think these razors were produced cheaply just before the last war, this razor (with the exception of my closed comb 'dammy') shaves better for me than any of my other 1912's. Why should it be any different, I doubt measuring equipment could show a difference but my face can.
Is it not intriguing that we are all the same but in tiny ways so different, and the same applies to razors, they are all basically the same but with tiny differences that we can detect!
Regards Dick.

24 Goldilocks? The GEM '24. As with Goldilocks and the Three Bears story, it's "Just right!" Norfolk Dick, I agree. Subtle differences that can be felt. It's absolutely amazing.

Dick brings up a good point. There are many subtle differences that can make a difference for some and not for others. I have a gold tone Junior and a Star with the longer fluted handles and beveled covers that look exactly alike with 2 exceptions. The Star has an indented thumb tab, the JR does not. The Star has 14 teeth, the Junior has 13. Two differences that most folks would not normally notice. The two razors shave very differently.
As Brian mentioned, the Goldilocks razor shaves just right for some of us. It is not the 24 EverReady Shovelhead, It is the 24 Gem. Folks here believe they appeared in the mid 20s. They have a round fluted handle. I see a lot for sale on the Internet. You have to be careful though, there is a Gem model out there that looks just like it. The difference is the back plate is shorter. I think Tom (HT)said these came in a cigarette case and were called the Triumph model. They are much milder. The Goldilocks is to me what the Damaskeene is to many others.
