I rotate between Pinaud Clubman, Speick, Shultons Old Spice Lime, and Ogallala Bay Rum Sandalwood. They all rock, are very distinctive, and all work well first and foremost as an AS or they wouldn't be in my rotation. Any fans of these out there?
John (Speickin' his mind). Get it? Speick! LOL!

I have probably 20 or more that I rotate around. AV old spice and clubman are favorites. Stetson english leather and british sterling are great. I really enjoy the pinaud line.

I am not much on balms. Make my skin feel weird. They really help my de-hydrated skin, especially in the winter. Some are a little thick, even the Kiehl's. But I've found if I put just a tiny bit of an A/S splash with it that it spreads very well all over my face and neck without any of the tacky or greasy feeling.

I am not much of a scent guy - and I agree with WCHNU that balms generally feel a little too ...... cloying? I though love the Goya brand Florida Water. LOVE IT!! I figured I would love all Florida water and picked up the fancier one that has been around forever, Murray & Lanman. I paid a much heftier price than the Goya brand (cheaper grocery items mostly is their specialty) but didn't like it. Kind of disappointed in it really. Unfortunately it looks like the Goya brand is next to impossible to get up here now. RATS!! If anybody can find it down south of the 49th parallel, apparently in psychic supply shops and spanish religion kind of stores, please think about the poorly smelling RocketMan!!

This will read like an advertisment, and maybe it is because I'm passionate about it, but it can't be purchased outside of a few brick and mortar stores in Maine, so I think I'm safe. Sharpspine, PM me your address and I'll send you a bottle of my private label Bay Rum. Lots of folks love the stuff for their dry skin. BTW, it isn't for sale - I can't legally sell it beyond the borders of Maine because of the drinking alcohol in it. Maybe some day if I feel like doing what needs to be done, but not now. You can read the review at B&B, look for Kramperts Finest Bay Rum in the review section. Or go to my website: www.krampertsfinest.com for other testimonials. The sales area at my site can't be found, so don't ask. Anyway, back to the thread. I formulated my own bay rum about a year ago now because I knew what I liked from my childhood, and I don't like much of what I smell today. Most scents are either too cheap smelling, too strong, or were too foo-foo, at least for my nose. The bay rums I knew of simply didn't smell like bay rum. Of course YMMV. I remembered the barber when I was a child, after shaving my neck and sideburns with his str8, slapping bay rum on me, and for a few seconds it smelled great! Then it was gone. That's the scent that I wanted. So when I formulated mine I had a couple of goals in mind. >It had to last longer than a few minutes. I was successful there. But for others to smell it after an hour or so they need to be kissing close, then they want to..., well, I'll just say it's smells delicious. I add Bitrex to it to keep folks from ingesting it. >I didn't want anything that would announce my approach before I entered a room. I dislike strong scents being on me with a passion. Again success. (The hard part was in getting it to linger at all, not having it too strong) > It had to have a decent moisturizer. Again success, it moisturizes and protects until it's washed off and it's never greasy. I use it as a mans moisturizer on my legs, arms and such. Just splash it on to coat the skin, let it dry, and go. No rubbing for 10 minutes to get it to soak in. >I also wanted it to have skin soothing and repair capabilities. Yup, it works there too. > and I don't like synthetic junk, so most of what's in the bottle is natural or has a natural origin. The Bitrex is straight out of a reaction vessel. As far as I know there is nothing else like it available. But to answer the question. So what do I use? My own bay rum of course, or one of my experimental scents based on the same moisturizer/skin repair package. If not those then I basically just use generic $3/pint Witch Hazel from the Dollar Store. (or is it $2?) I do have some 45 year old Shulton Old Spice that I use sparingly once a year or so, and when it's gone, it's gone. FWIW, I've had ladies requesting a feminine version of mine for their use. I need to work on that. Someday. Edit: BTW, I used to work in a lab, so formulating it was pretty easy.

Wow, Brian thank you I'd love to try something else that may help soothe my skin. What's interesting is that I used a little bay rum this morning from a sample that I received before Christmas. I'll look forward to trying yours and talking with you about how it compares to the one I used today.

I use several after shaves on a regular basis; Speick After Shave Lotion, Musgo Real After Shave Splash, Pitralon (made in Germany), and Proraso After Shave Splash and Balm. But my all time favorite and what I use 90% of the time is:
FLOID BLUE

I have never been a fan of splashes, especially alcohol based ones. Even less so when they are strongly scented. So:
- Castle Forbes, best overall performance, and outstanding quality
- Esbjerg AS Gel, cheaper than Castle Forbes, and even more efficient. Organic, and made to Austrian purity laws.
- Esbjerg AS Oil, perfect for dry skin or cold weather.
- Baume.be AS Balm, my second favourite for cold weather. The shaving cream is a perfect complement.
- Alvarez Gómez AS Balm, above average performance, but an extremely nice summer scent.
- Truefitt & Hill #10 AS Balm, cheap, and very effective. Might be a touch too much if you have greasy skin.
The stuff made by Creighton is usually very good, and cheap. So, St James, Groomed or The Real Shaving Company would be high on my list if money were actually an issue, because they all deliver tremendous value for money.

In no particular order:
Splash (non-menthol): Captain's Choice Sandalwood, Cat-O-9 Tails, Krampert's Finest Bay Rum, Tabac, Speick.
Splash (menthol): Osage Rub, Krampert's Finest Frostbite, Fine Snakebite, Proraso Green.
Balm: Pre de Provence, L'Occitane Cade, Stirling Sandalwood, Speick.
I have more, but these are the ones I use most often.
