This question came up the other day so I thought I would share what I found and think. It was easier for me to just put it on the blog but if I need to copy and paste let me know. Thanks! nicksandweepers.wordpress.com/201...damaskene/

Very nice blog. Thanks for sharing. The old Dame is still one of my all time favorites.

Great blog! Although your 1912 and Damaskeene both have flat top caps with a bevel, I understand that most Damaskeenes and some of the earlier 1912s have rounded caps which makes a crucial difference to the feel of the shave...

Good to know, I know the label Damaskene doesn't necessarily identify one particular razor. Might have to buy another

Nice blog! You have consistently wonderful equipment you shave with - the software, the hardware - the works. I can tell you truly enjoy a good shave. It has a nice warm feel over at your place, keep up the good work!
I am impressed with your scuttle. Are you enjoying using it? Is it something you use all the time or do you have a bowl rotation you use?

Thanks for all the kind words! I love the scuttle very much! It's a Robert Becker, I think the last one before he retired..... again I have lately been face lathering apt but when I go to a bowl I usually break this one out. A nice warm lather on a cold morning is just so nice.

The rounder top does make a difference. It seems to me that the flat top Dammy is basically a 1912. Someone yell if I am wrong.

I've got a round-top Damaskeene (with bevel), a flat-top Damaskeene, a regular 1912, and a non-Damaskeene with a round top (though the radius of the curve seems smaller than the Damaskeene).
They all shave differently.
The round-top Damey is my favorite followed by the regular 1912. These two are the most similar, with the Damey having a more natural feel to it.
The flat-top Damey is noticeably more mild than any of the others, and I haven't managed that close of a shave with it yet. It does provide the most comfortable shave, but that's just because it doesn't seem to cut very close.
The round-top non-Damey can be downright aggressive and hurtful, but it will shave nicely if you can keep the angle extra shallow.
EDIT: Just to clarify, all my 1912's are GEMs, so I guess a little OT here on the Ever Ready board.

Just got one today and have yet to shave with it but I am shocked by how little blade exposure this razor has. Even my Push Button and Junior has more. This is normal?
