I remember reading about this a long while back. Some gents might not like this idea but it opens up an experience to experiment with a multitude of DE blades out there. Sadly, I have not clicked with the majority of DE blades available. My favorite go to DE blade is the Personna Blue Lab it is sharp smooth and very forgiving. Keep us up to date on how this new mod turns out performance wise. I'd like to try this with my Personna Lab blades.

Yeah- waiting for the epoxy to cure and have several dates with other razors over the next few days, but I'll surely report back. If this works as well as is claimed then it could change the whole game...

Oh my days! This works superbly. I highly recommend trying this, if you can be bothered to make the blade holder and snap the DE blades. It gives SE rigidity to the DE edge, creating a super sharp SE blade and an enormous variety of blade choices and just took my 1912 experience to a whole new level. Of course, if you're happy with your current SE blades you might think what's the point? And I much prefer carbon steel blades anyway, so I won't be using this on a daily basis. But this does open up a whole new universe for the dedicated SE user. Really, try it and be amazed!!

And here's a picrure of the blade holder with a DE halfblade inserted. You can see part of the halfblade visible in the SE central hole. The halfblade edge barely protrudes from the SE blade sandwich and the epoxy from the back to the central hole prevents the halfblade from sliding any further back and disappearing. This means the DE edge is rigid and clamped between the SE blades and secured with the 1912 cap, it does not flex and creates a true SE shaving experience but now with enormous blade choice. The most crucial thing in making the holder is to epoxy only from the SE sharp edges to the central hole, and to insert a thick sheet of paper between the SE sandwich from the blunt edges to the central hole while the SE sandwich is drying, so that there is a gap free from epoxy into which the halfblade can be inserted when the epoxy has cured and the paper is removed. I'm just going to say it again: try it and be amazed!

Interesting results. I don't mind trying this experiment though it seems to take a bit too much effort for using a DE blade. Still, I will reference your post for future use since I want to try my Personna Labs on an SE razor.

Horrible ideal. Dave thought the same of the original post. I agree. This is like putting a Ford motor in my Dodge. I can do it. But it does not belong. As usual YMMV, but the Fuzzy one does not approve.

Whatever floats your boat...could come in handy I guess if out of town and you couldn't find any SE blades... But for me, I dig my SE blades as much as I dig the razors that hold them...Guess it's not for me...But if someone has a favorite DE blade that they were 'jonesing' for but didn't want to use a DE razor, I guess it could be just the thing...

I feel I need to clarify something. I am not putting anyone down. Just for me the ideal is not a good one.

I find it to be an interesting idea. For the right person it gives options.

If the truth be told I have been trimming Astras with a pair of scissors and using them easily in 1912s for a while. I like the shave.
This looks a little finicky to make the holder, but once made it is good to go. I would give this a try. It will at the very list provide an alternative should SE blades become hard to get. There is only ASRs manufacturing so a back up isn't all bad.
I understand Fuzzy's take though as it does 'feel' wrong for some reason. They resisted the steel wheel for a while too. : )

... they fit Feathweights, too: 1912s: ... but not Micromatics: To use a regular DE blade, you need to snip the edges off and the back end which makes it a single edge. I guess you could spine them or even snip the sharp edges off another couple to use either side for rigidity, making it about as thin as a single SE blade. It's a bit wasteful, but DE blades are cheap as chips. Go VERY careful with any sharp edges you snip off!

Like he said. : ). They end up nice and stiff in a 1912.
I remember the blade holder idea though and will try to get time for making one.
All the purists are starting to grimace now. I can feel it out in the interwebanet.

I remember that cat...hmm....Bruce....He wrote about this idea...I believe he said that this adapter worked great in his 1912 and he was all for it, but later he said it was a spring killer in the 1912's...I think it also killed a Damaskeene spring...He later said it worked perfect in the ER'24's and that the DE blades worked in the 1914's without the adapter.... I don't know any of this...just relaying what "Bruce on Shaving" had to say....Thought I would relay this so no one wrecks their favorite Damaskeene... It wouldn't hurt to check to see just what the DE blade ER'14 connection is....could come in handy during the Shaveacalpse...
