As part of our ongoing razor loan arrangement, I got to try out PJGH's 1914 and 1924. It might be heresy to say so, but I didn't enjoy the 1914 at all. It felt uncomfortable on the face, and the shave was not as good as the 1912. YMMV obviously. The 1924 on the other hand just blew me away. I read that there are a less and more aggressive type and this was clearly the latter since the shave for me was in the same category as the OCMM but a bit smoother. Now I can't decide whether I prefer the 1924 - a bit ungainly but powerful and smooth - or the OCMM - equally as powerful, a much more elegant design but with a tendency to be a bit rough. What do you think?

I much prefer the Micromatic over the 1924, and the 1914 over both. Mileage does indeed vary!

I prefer the 1924. It is the one razor that gives me a BBS every time. I learned to shave with the more aggressive variant. I know I jumped in at the deep end but I was new to SEs and was not aware of its reputation. It's so smooth by the third shave I was fully converted to SEs. I'm not so sure it would have happened had I started with the OCMM- it is rougher and usually only gives me a DFS. If you want to look objectively at them look at them side by side. The (more aggressive variant) '24 has clearly more blade exposure but I'm not sure why it is so much smoother. How are you shaving with it? Flat against the face? That's how I started and get the best results. I (later) tried the original ER instructions BirdLives posted and thought it nothing more than a cruel initiation joke

I like the '24 over the OCMM, they both give me good shaves, I just prefer the classic lines of the "Shovelhead"

I like both the ER '24 (there is a GEM '24 which is a 1912 variant) and the OCMM; with the ER '24 maybe having the edge over the OCMM. The '14 is just ehh (with a lift of the shoulders).
That's precisely why there are so many razor models. At one time I liked the '14 over the others. Tastes change.

I agree with Brian. My taste have bounce around since I started down SE slope. I always seem to fall back on my trusty '24.

TWENTY-FOUR!...I love my 'Shovelheaded Beauty" Actually I dearly love my Micromatics..both the Clog-pruf and the OCMM...They give perfect shaves and make it seem so easy....But if I had to choose...I'd have to go with the ER'24 in a grudge match shave-off...I believe it shaves equally as close but also so smooth at the same time...One of the smoothest razors of all time...YMMV factor definitely ROCKS on shave offs like this one... PS: BTW I wasn't knocked out by the ER'14 at first stroke like I was with both the OCMM & ER'24....But in preparation for the Little Lather Catcher's Centennial B-day, I shaved ever day for a week and something clicked. Now I feel it shaves as good or better than any razor I have ever had the pleasure Might be my favorite now...time will tell.

Maybe a bit over stated....I do love my Little Lather Cather, and she has secured a place for herself in my top tier, but my ER'24 is still the reigning Top Dog of my shave cave.....

I couldn't ever really get along with the 1924 I had. I got it in a PIF on another site and re-PIF'd it back into the world. The OCMM, on the other hand, is one of my favorite SE's.
Maybe someday I'll pickup another '24 to see if I can get it to play nice.

I sure wish I could write that about my '14 BL.
I can use it with a fresh blade for the first few shaves, but after that it's just too mild for me and I don't get the BBS I demand. Yes, I know (now :-) ) about the spring that pushes the blade into place.

But I believe maybe you and I have both been spoiled by our Shovelheaded lovelies....lol

The loss of that razor kit was OK. I didn't appreciate it; the case was something that I'd never even look at. It's somewhere where it'll be appreciated now. I still have a '14 (uncased) and that's really all I ever wanted.

From aggressive to very aggressive, aside from blade exposure, are there markings on the '24 that would let you know it's more aggressive?
