I like water too. Maine is known for it's aquifers and the quality of the water. We have our own well and the water that comes out of it... well, contractors who have worked here love it and have commented on it. I drink it, wash with it, shave with it and it flushes just fine too. Beginning in a few days I need to put in a new pressure tank and that means sweating pipe. It's part of the water delivery system and it must be done. Gotta maintain it and winter isn't far away. The water that comes out of our well is really delicious.
Adult beverages... Not beer. I love beer, but it does NOT love me anymore. You know how one only rents beer? Well, the last part of renting is the return of it. I think it's the hops in beer that doesn't like my prostate. Aging sux even with saw palmetto as it pertains to draining the kidneys. I stick to wine and cocktails and those only in moderation for the same reason. Yeah, I know far too much info. I miss my home brewed beer though. I made English Amber, Porter, Stout, a summer wheat beer, and a barley wine ale, but that's all history now. I loved my ales while on the deck watching nature roll by while meat grilled over lump charcoal. There was a time when I had 20+ cases of beer either aging or ready for consumption. As I wrote, it's history. Damn, I miss that! BTW, for the ales I had to add calcium minerals to harden the water a bit, it's too soft as it is for a proper English ale. Yes, I always served it unrefrigerated; it was really delicious and I wanted to taste it.

Damn......now I want to taste it too....... OK.....After the West Coast Tost Host we need to: bring the Shaving Train to the Maine strain of the East Coast, New England Tost Host....Krampert's Finest Shaving Cocktails and Ale... BTW are the lobsters still plentiful and inexpensive? I've heard my old haunt CT is having real problems with their Lobster population...But I would think you guys are still within the thick of the Lobster belt...

Plenty of lobsters, inexpensive? What's expensive? Last I took notice of it it was about $10/lb that's too expensive for me, but for others not so much. I prefer steamers (always have) but I don't turn my nose up at lobster. But the homebrew, that's all long gone. Plenty of water though.

So it is Brian's for steamers, lobster and ale? Yeah!
Thnx SD!
Ok. But the steamers thing. Brian, I struggle to get the darn sand out of the ones I can dig all over out here.
Do you have a good plan for cleaning freshly dug clams? I have given up since I found that true grit is not only the name of an old western movie.
And to stay with the thread, to go with the clams I would have a nice light pilsner, low on hops, perhaps a little cloudy but not a wheat beer. Barley .....yum. And deadly cold.

We have plenty of space for tenting and motels not too many miles away for those who need a real bed. I can rig a latrine (my septic system can't handle large amounts) and I can put pictures in the bottom of the hole to aim for. I'd love to do a clam bake (sort of). I'll cook whatever you want to buy. The best time would be late August or early September because the fresh corn would be ready. I grow some fantastic fresh corn, and the adventurous (or masochists) could pee on the electric fence that keeps the raccoons out of the corn. I've never been able to get anyone to test the fence for me by peeing on it or touching it; what's up with that!?
RM, I get my steamers from an outfit on the coast that keeps them in running water so that the clams continue siphoning so as to expel the grit. I've never gotten any grit from their clams. I can't tell you how long it takes for them to clean themselves up. They have huge tanks and sacks of clams so it could be days that they're in the tanks. FWIW, they use salt water, no reason that can't be copied at home I think. Just be sure to aerate the water. Or if you have the ability, put the clams in a mesh sack and suspend them from a wharf, over the side of a boat, something. I wouldn't hesitate to use mussels right out of the water but I really don't have good access to any. They wouldn't have any grit.

Yo RM, Brian's spot on about being able to duplicate the cleaning process.....My wife, Aydan, has gotten it together and now NO SAND...Nadda!... She changes the water the clams are in every few hours for I guess a day and a half...to two days...and the clams clean themselves...She keeps her's in a large kettle of tap water, not salt water, in the Fridge and pours them in to a large colander and rinses them and changes the water in the keettle and puts them back. She says she changes the water maybe 10 times a day....or every 3 hours... Of course the clams are alive, if any die before cooking she tosses them... Hey if we're crashing at Brians we should do a little shooting, shaving and eating....ha,ha....doesn't get much better than that.... BTW, RM....Boxleys has the best Clams I've gotten since I've been here... I played there the last two night...Clams are awesome!! Let me know when you want to come back down and I'll make sure they have them....

Ha! Wouldn't the neighbors like to have a firing line opening up! That might not be best for neighbor relations. They can't do much about it, but I try to limit it out of consideration. Once someone imbibes alcohol they're done shooting for the day.

Once someone imbibes alcohol they're done shooting for the day. Ohh, I'm with you on that one, big time....I only drink Root Beer til after the last shot has been fired.....The Single Malt doestn't get opened til after the Hoppes No.9 gets opened and the 'cleaning party' begins....ha,ha. i can dig your respect for your neighbors. When I suggested it I didn't even realize it was a real posibility. I just knew you were a serious shooter, and Instructor...Hmm..in that case....maybe we should place all the targets in the opposite direction from their houses then......:^). (SD, Please Pardon my being facetious....In 'real-time, I do take firearm practice very seriously, as I know you do aswell. In fact, I plan on gettin my NRA instructors certificate next month. I always thought I'd like to do a little firearms instruction aswell as giving Jazz improv lessons when I retire)

Good luck with the Instructor certificate! It's definitely worth having. I have no idea what your instructors instructor will be like but ours was an ex-instructor with the Mass state police or some such. It was easily the most intensive instruction I have ever undergone anywhere and I had some intense instruction in the military. It was 2 or 3 days (I can't remember) of non stop intense training. It was not what I expected at all, but I was much better off for it. At the end of each day I was totally burnt out. My students appreciate that level of training though. I'm a much better instructor for it.
Let me know how you make out with it.
