Update: So i shaved with the 1914 again today, and i got a nasty cut under my nose. I looked at the blade and it had moved slightly back on one side (same side that's missing the small weld on the butterfly). So it doesn't push the blade forward as it should on that side. What a shame! Now have to look for another one :-(

That's a shame!
Don't throw the parts away, maybe you or someone else down the road can figure out what to do with them. Of course handles are easy to use elsewhere.

I'm sorry to hear this. Cuts can really sap the fun out of shaving.
I think we are all so optimistic around here about these old tools because we all have probably run on the edge of caution at times. They do bite back occasionally.
It sounds like you will be able to chalk it up as learning and carry on. A nice 1914 shave is still in your future.

By any chance, does anyone know how to fix this issue? It needs some welding The picture on the first page shows the problem area

I can't see from the picture that well.....If the spring is still in one piece I dont see why you couldn't get the spot welded on that original spot.....Someone in a metal shop could look at it and tell you right away if it would hold.....If mine broke loose thats what I would do... But if the spring is snapped....then I would arrange a nice memorial service for such a great razor.....But if the spring is still in one piece I think you are still in business....

The butterfly spring is in one piece. but the right side that's lost it's weld is higher than the other side so it doesn't sit behind the blade when the door is closed.

Do you know any friendly, bored jeweller who could give a quick look and a low price? Your tiny weld professionals!
There are some serious epoxies these days if you care for the joe handyman approach.
I have never repaired one. A replacement might be best?

Hi rocketman. yes, i think it's best for me to look for another one. but too bad you don't know what you're getting when ordering from ebay. this one looked near mint, and i couldn't tell any issues from the pictures.

If it was misrepresented you can always negotiate with the seller to return it if it is worth doing. All in all I have done very well with my ebay buys. I have rcvd the odd buggered up bit, but at times the items are much better than they presented, so it did even out for me. The nice thing about shaving, is you will pretty much need to until you can't hold a razor, and even then someone can help. So.... You have time to enjoy the hunt for a nice 1914. : )

Thank you very much for your support. I have had some great experiences on ebay as well, and just a few bad ones. But I will NOT give up on my SE shaving adventure!

Frankly, the seller unless he's experienced with SE razors might not have even known. You didn't know by looking and you know more than the seller does in all likelihood.
Right now it's not working and I don't want you to do anything to screw it up. But putting some epoxy behind it and above it to hold it in place might make it work for years. Just don't get any where it would affect the spring action. Be sure it's clean of soap residue and perfectly dry. I wouldn't be in a hurry to do the job. Let it dry over time- no heat.

Sounds like just the ticket....great suggestion SD.....Dooli, let us know how this works....I know after the epoxy in the center of the spring drys, you can support it in the center and gently adjust the sides for the right blade holding tension....The word "gently" is the key word. And just a little to make both sides at the same angle as the side that works good now, would probably work....Good luck... I think ShadowsDad's idea could make you a Happy Shaver...one things for sure.....you don't have anything to lose...and alot to gain...
