As some of you may know the GEM Micromatic was marketed as "guaranteed unbreakable." The ad can be seen here: books.google.com/books?id=ut4DAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA598&dq=gem+guaranteed+unbreakable&hl=en&sa=X&ei=v1NEVO3FL8G0yASymIC4Dg&ved=0CB0Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=gem%20guaranteed%20unbreakable&f=falseThis made me curious as to how much abuse this razor can take. Especially considering my own experience with pot metal razors. I decided to test both a GEM MMCP and a GEM MMOC which where graciously given to me by HoosierTrooper. I started with the CP by holding my arm out at elbow length to simulate the distance where a razor would be realistically dropped in daily use (I am 5'11 by the way). I dropped it 13 times to a solid concrete floor as I did not want to damage my tile bathroom floor. I settled on 13 because it is an unlucky number of course. This is the razor before the drop: During the drops. action video: After: It worked perfectly fine. Even the blade stops where undamaged. The comb was not bent even the slightest. A few scratches yes but that is purely cosmetic. 100% as functional as before Next test is the GEM MMOC. For this test I ran it over with my car which is 5200lb of American (Or Canadian) steel. the GEM MMOC Before: As you can see this particular MMOC has paper thin blade stops. The CP will have thicker blade stops than this but this is still unusually weak blade stops for a MMOC. Now the action video: Ouch! That MMOC was pulverized! or was it? A piece flew off somewhere. Found it. As you can see the teeth aren't even bent. Though it did remove the top of the blade stops. BUT there was something still left there- enough blade stop for a shave. Just nubs but enough. Assembling it was tough in that the square holes on the head was a very tight fit. a Rubber mallet did the trick AND: It's alive!!!

Wow! The OCMM is the ultimate SE n'est pas? I prefer the shave from the 1924 but for style and performance the Micromatic kicks the rest to the kerb.
It's amazing that they're repairable too - you could be a pioneer in this field...

I'm not surprised that these can take a beating. It's good to know that you were able to assemble the MMOC back together again. I would have been surprised if the teeth would have been damaged since they are quite thick. Next up the will it survive dynamite test!

(Note to self, run it over with the car, clean it up, reassemble with a hammer.) :-) Of course I had my tongue in cheek as I wrote that, but seriously, I've never heard of anyone getting one back together again.

It was worth donating a couple Micromatics just to see how tough and durable they really are. Quite impressive!

That is great stuff! Those micros are darn sturdy razors. It seems the guarantee remains good even after all these years.
I really like the videos to accompany the story. Is there anymore torture you could inflict on the poor things? Maybe run them over with neighbours lawnmower or??? : )

What kills me is you ran over it with its teeth down on concrete....It it had been dirt, it would have been unaffected...If the teeth had been up, it might have scredded your tire....lol! It appears GEMs little barber in a box has a Rambo thing going on...rotflmao !
