Yes that sharpener is an excellent little device. It comes with a hone that has leather on one side as well. The leather has deteriorated and the hone is a composite synthetic and I feel a little low for finishing blades, so I just use it with whatever hones I choose. The original hone is exactly 1/2 inch thick so the device was designed to set the angle at that height. I typically go with that and as you say, just use whatever thickness of book or what have you to provide a platform. But, once you do a few strokes and check the edge, it is very simple to adjust the height to precisely catch the bevel by just adding some sheets of paper. The very cool feature, is that the blade end rotates by turning the knurled part with your thumb and forefinger. That way you do a stroke, lift and turn the blade over, do another stroke, turn etc. I tend to use circle strokes for the bulk of the edge conditioning, but then use a series of no pressure strokes with turning the blade after each. You only need to put the blade in once and then away you go. It is handy as heck this thing! BTW....RM.....if you sometime just want to take this 1909 Beauty out for a spin, and just want to use a GEM Stainless......I found, that if you load a modern GEM, and press your left thumb down on the edge (holding it in place with the blade stops.....Then with my right hand I take an Injector blade. Put it's edge just above the blade side holders. Then slide the injector blade, edge first under the side blade holders....Just enough to cover the side holes of the GEM....BINGO! Now close and shave....This 1909 is a wonderful shaver with a modern GEM Stainless....and that injector blade locks the GEM blade in nice and tight....This might be my favorite shaving razor in my whole stable.....Might settle down and let this New Ever Ready make an honest shaver out of me.....}8^)) You are one determined fellow! I am impressed you have been able to locate one of these razors. I have several times thought of generously sending mine to you because you were often speaking about it. Seriously. But, my inner spoiled brat just couldn't part with it. Now I don't have to repeatedly be confronted with my own struggles to share! I'm just heading out to work, but intend to dig out mine and play around with loading a gem as you talk about. Ill comment here how it went. Congratulations on finding such a fine razor. And........on another year! HAPPY BDAY!!!! And...... Pics? : )

Ahhh, I can post pics.... OK....as some of you know, I became infatuated with the 'shoverhead' type razor...And almost all were invented by and patented by Julius de Mesquita...all of the history is on previous threads and can be searched...But the point being, when Rocket Dood and some of the cats acquired the grand daddy of all shovelheads the Ever Ready 'New' 1909, I immediately put it on a pedestal and at the No.1 spot on my Holy Grail list.... Well one day I get a note from Billy Fergie with a link to ebay UK and well four pictures are worth a thousand words... Shaved better than I expected...Went from no1 Grail to no1 go to.....

Great catch, Bird! The shovelhead is one of those razors that looks wonderful in all-brass, IMHO...plus I like this handle better than regular shovelhead's and I love the stropper feature. Ok, ok....adding it to my hunting list also

Thanks guys.... This ER 1909 shaves like you would expect a 1924 too; as you might guess; only like a 1924 on steroids....Just as close only very, very smooth...and did I mention how smooth it shaved....Lol, yep, this rascal is a real charmer...so smooth, that the closness of the strokes really surprises you. I sometimes with this one have a little trouble getting the new GEM blades to stay under the side guards, so I just slip an injector blade under the side guards to lock it in, problem averted... See as I go to slide the GEM blade under the side hooks toward the front blade stops on the comb. I lay an injector blade on top, edge towards the side blade holders. The GEM spine butts up against the back of the injector blade and holds it in place as you slide them both under the side hooks and forward til the SE blade edge stops against the front blade stops. Easy Fix! I've heard some have that prob with their 1924s...the samething will work there aswell...

Very nice razor! The '24 is the razor my hand normally reaches for. Yeah, that's nicer than a '24.

Very nice razor! The '24 is the razor my hand normally reaches for. Yeah, that's nicer than a '24. Wouldn't say, it's nicer necessarilly....It is older and has that classic old style packaging and strop handle etc. And it tis a very smooth shaver....I'll put it this way, If you love the ER 1924 you'll love it's Daddy too...}8^)) I've tried to compare.... I believe maybe the 1909 is a little more aggressive but also smoother, and noticeably lighter, due to the hollow handle which houses the stropper....But then in all fairness, the 1924 doesn't need to be anymore aggressive...I mean it is already more aggressive than my OCMM!....Well, to be more specific....I have two, the 1909 is noticeably more aggressive than my 1924 with the curved comb, but only a little more efficient than the 1924 with the flat comb...Make sense? The 1909 is noticeably smoother than both 1924s...But then again, in all fairness, I know some folks and Brian, you in perticular have said that you like for an aggressive razor to feel aggressive. It helps to "feel the road". But then the 1909 is louder, probably because of the hollow handle. So in some cases, not unlike the Damaskeene; true fans of the 1924 could find that razor just about perfect in every way...Period! And the same can be said for the 1909...I could make the parallel, that the 1909 is to the 1924; what the Damaskeene is to the 1912....Equally efficient but smoother and maybe more sophisticated. .. All the above comparisons are superfluous rhetoric, with razors it always comes down to a matter of personal taste...I only did the comparison because I've been asked to...And before I got the 1909 I was asking Wayne and whoever I saw with one how it compared to the 1924... Personally, I'm a big fan of Julius de Mesquita, and it does my heart and face both good to have his original masterpiece.

Ok, ok....adding it to my hunting list also If you are actively looking...I think the odds are with the ebay UK, for one turning up...When the ER1914 came out, ER moved the production and sales of the 1909 to England...So there were definitely more sold there than in the U.S.

Thanks for that. If I find one I'll snatch it up and decide. It's been so long since I bought anything for shaving that I wonder if I even know how to anymore. :-)

Haha! Great to have TOST back! Great to see everyone again! I'll put my first post back with a wonderful catch I landed recently ... Mint? I actually got the whole kit and kaboodle! Left is the cardboard outer for the razor case, left is the stropper: Imitation gold ... classy! It has been thought that the Ever Ready man looks slightly less psychotic at this (earlier) age ...

Cheers, fellows This is a replacement. Yes, I used to have one but sold it on when I consolidated my interest to predominantly Damaskeene onwards and the core. I've since sold off all my Micromatics and beyond ... my collection now is purely 1912, the Damaskeene that preceded it, one or two Streamlines, 1914s & 1924s ... but this, I could not let me pass by.
