In my medicine chest! I put another shelf in the medicine chest, but that was just a cork in a burst dam. I had my "stuff" on the side of the countertop, in the medicine chest, in cases in my armoire, and it always was like playing musical gear. I knew the answer was a cabinet, and I had my eye open for a reasonably priced one, and if I couldn't find one I knew I'd make what I wanted and it wouldn't be tiny. Time passed and no cabinets showed themselves as being what I wanted, so with winter dragging on and the warm weather soon to follow, I decided to take the bull by the horns and build what I wanted. I had this unused space on the wall behind and above the obama presidential library chair. That space also had 2 studs for me to use as support for the cabinet. OK, so it isn't done yet. It still needs to get the doors, but here it is minus one shelf. You can see the upper shelf is double thickness from the extra glass. I finally decided on the way I wanted them to look, so they should be done in a few days, as I can get time to work on them. The carcass is red oak, the back is oak plywood that's been pickled. I also have the ability to put in 1/2 width shelves if I decide to hang the razors on their own shelf and out of the way. I'd need to build the shelf, but that's no big deal. Right now the razors are on their sides. I still don't know what to do with the gear on top of the cabinet. All in due time I suppose. Heck, I know they'll be a lot of rearranging until I get things stowed away in a decent manner. If I remember correctly the opening is 27x33 thereabouts. I'll post a finished pic unless I don't like the doors.

Nice job SD. I like the way the shelves are adjustable. I do see a lot of empty space where you could add more shelves. (Then you can work on filling them up!)

Alan... Well, I have some experience with this. ;D I have no idea how long folks on this board have been married, but take it from me, you stake out your turf, stand your ground and then say, "Yes dear.". All of what follows is how we deal with the Chairman of the Board. There is only one size to a garage, a shop, or any addition... Far too small. In keeping with that knowledge (I've been there before) I decided to commandeer the entire space above the hopper (the obama presidential library) and some that the Mrs can't reach; I thought that move pretty slick, to put it out of her reach (you'll see especially pristine sets up there; even now). I did allow the wifes Lady Gillette to have an area since it is shaving, and it psychologically involves her in the entire cabinet. You can see her LG in the case to the right on the second shelf. Whenever I refer to the cabinet I call it a shave cabinet (experience there as well- one never wants to be at all ambiguous or other folks [the CotB!] will commandeer things to their own twisted ends) and I tell the Mrs that the unused room above is for proper shave towels. I thought long and hard about the doors. I preferred glass and pushed hard for them . But I knew the drill. I also suggested that the remainder of the oak plywood would be less expensive and would keep eyes out of the cabinet. Pickled Oak panels would contrast nicely with the red oak (no lie or manipulation there). So the CFO agreed and I got her involved with the doors and the stiles and rails and the pickled panels. So if it doesn't work visually it's her fault. (We need a rubbing hands together with a gleeful face smilie for here) That'll also keep her from seeing the inventory except once a week since the doors will be opaque at her choice and direction. Once she realizes the inventory has gotten astronomical it'll be too late. (evil laugh goes here)

Well, yes it would John, but I'm beginning to suspect there might not be much chance of that.

Now that looks nice. Don't know what kind of doors you are going to put on it but I think if it was mine I would go the glass door route. Got to show off all that great shaving gear.

The wife and I discussed it Possum. Yes, I'd like to display the gear, but it's right above the hopper, and not everyone puts the lid down. I can picture in my minds eye someone looking ahead rather than on the job "at hand" and afterward opening the cabinet (lid up) and something going into the bowl. With my luck it'd be a brush. If we had children coming over I'd put a lock mechanism in the door to keep their hands away from the blades. But the time of children in our lives is long over for all of our friends and us. I hope our friends aren't the children.
We both agreed that out of sight might be out of mind. Most folks won't open a closed cabinet they can't see into. Or I hope that's the case with the folks we allow into our home. I'm fairly certain that all of our friends leave closed things closed in our home, and don't go into stuff without an invitation. That's just the nature of our lives, things we own, our friends, their knowledge of what we own and the importance of them leaving closed things alone.
Glass is an invitation to peer within. Maybe to touch.
I really would have liked to put glass in there to show off the collection (except the for the musings above), but the doors were made today, so it's a done deal. Three inch wide red oak frames with Guatemalan "oak" veneer plywood. We both thought that pickling the panels would actually detract from showing off the grain of the panels. Even so, the contrast of the white panels and the native red oak will look great and the grain should pop when the finish is applied. The only regret I have is that the red oak wasn't quarter sawn.
It'll be complete in a few days at most as long as I have time to work on it. 3 coats of Polycrylic and a rub down after the 2nd coat should do it.
I'll post finished pics here when it's complete. I eagerly anticipate finishing the job and getting it truely into service.
FWIW, if I decide somewhere down the road that I want to install glass I still will be able to. The doors are joined with pocket screws, so I can open them up, pull the panels out and install glass. I just don't think I'll want to.

Here is the finished cabinet: Now I wish I had given the door panels a light pickling to accentuate their light color a bit more. And adding glass at a later date? That's a "No.". After joining the rails and stiles with pocket screws I glued plugs in place to hide the oval holes. I might be able to remove the plugs, then the screws, to get glass in there, but I think it would be easier to build new doors, and it would look better after the surgery.

Beautiful work. I can't build a cardboard box myself. Great to see someone's work like that.
