Made you look! But no really this razor has characteristics of both. I wrote about a squat head GEM 1912 before: theoriginalsafetytoo.com/thread/1727/squat-head-bevel-less-1912 Well, this one also has a squat head but I will first get to the point why I liken it to the Damaskeene and 1914. It is a 1912 type obviously and it has a VERY round head just like a 1914. And it also has MASSIVE blade exposure. Compare it to the blade exposure (aggro version) of the 1924: The two squat heads compared. Note the extremely rounded head: The two squat head's blade exposure compared: Another shot of it: The shave-- I hate it. Unlike the other mild and smooth squat-head this one shaves very harshly and tuggy. It reminds me of the shave the 1914 gives for the most part but it also reminds me of the Damaskeene. I don't like either.

You did! Gosh! That is a rounded head. It might also be a trick of the light, but I think it is just a little taller from the handle to the baseplate than a regular 1912. Harsh and tuggy? Is there any blade movement at the front edge? The hooks look large - it is possible that there might be some micro-fine movement going on. Likewise, check the strength of the back clip and if necessary shim it with a slice of metal pushed in behind the clip. An interesting fish, nevertheless.

Is this an Ever Ready? Looking through mine, I have an Ever Ready, Brooklyn stamped on the inside of the baseplate, which has a curve profile just like yours and is, I think, just a little more curved than other curve cap examples.
It doesn't have quite the blade presentation as yours, but not far off ...

No, GEM. Here it is on the right compared to my other squat-head GEM. The font is different as you can see.

I have had 1912s where the blade moves back because of a weak spring and this is not one of them. I just don't like the shave. I finished my shave off with a 1924 and all was well.

You've just been ... by Fram! I don't like razors with excessive blade exposure. I always get harsh rough whisker tugging shaves with them. To this day I have yet to have a positive experience with my 1914. You might have the same exact experience I do with these type of shavers. I just avoid these type of razors lol.

Aye, the Modern GEM Blade is not as rigid as the original blades and they can flex somewhat, and a larger blade exposure can bring this to the fore.......I have never shaved with a 1914 without SHIMMING the SPINE....
I have quite a heavy growth and sometimes get mistaken for an Arab or a tourist when I have a Growth and a Tan in the summer.....No kidding.....
I use very short strokes with the 1914 on my first downward pass and then I find it comes into its own.....I liked it so much I went and bought another.......I also find that the angle needs to be 100% spot on with the 1914....No misses.......I think they are the pick of the Crop......My 1914 will never see an NON SHIMMED BLADE......

That indeed is a very convex head. I can see how the blade contact angle would be quite steep. Significantly sharper than the gem you contrast it with. I can't see how the blade exposure would impact the shave, although there is a lot of blade showing. That angle issue though......
It really is astounding the great number of variations these seemingly similar razors keep revealing. Thnx for the post.
