That is exactly what I thought when I saw the GEM that I bought ...
I was looking at the Cabinet Set and initially thinking, "it's nice, but both razors are missing top caps" ... and then it occurred to me that the 1924 had its cap flipped open and was sitting on it and that the GEM was in fact something I'd never seen before.
... and then it started.

Greetings Paul
That's a fascinating razor and you have found one in a very good condition which is a real bonus. Isn't it interesting how they made a few 'oddballs', it seems they were 'testing the temperature of the water' perhaps to see if there was a potential market. Or performing an exercise in cost cutting to see if it would affect sales. It is all guesswork and I doubt if we'll ever know, but in any event a lovely razor!
Regards Dick.

After the merger, Star did seem to be the test bed for a number of odd designs - there was another 1924 style razor, more like a development of the 1909 than the Ever Ready 1924. I think in this case, and with the 1924, with the merger GEM/Star had access to the Ever Ready patents and these were the results.
Put further into context, a lather catcher was released under the Star brand as late as the mid-'20s, something which was dead and buried by the end of the '10s in the Ever Ready and GEM lines.

I really dig this idea.....It makes the Liitle Lather Catcher that much more of a lather catcher.....Kind of like the Little Lather Catcher on steroids.....of course everything comes down to the shave.....So Paul, How is the shave?

Mild. Mild, and a little cumbersome under the nose, certainly compared to the 1914, which I shaved with on my previous shave. I think it would work out best with a fresh blade.

Aye Paul, these razors are a wee treat......The postman arrived with mine this morning.......Looks the same mint condition as your one.........It came in this big box full of news paper......and this little red box sprung out like Zebadee .......What a simple design........Lovely.......: ......Let you know what I think of the shave........
I just had my first shave with the Star 1914.......I took on board what Paul had said about the razor being mild mid as he put it.....
I got a GEM spine and cut in half and used it as a shim under the spine of a loaded brand new GEM blade......
I had a two day growth and the Star 1914 performed very well.....I got a really acceptable two pass close shave with a couple of touch ups........I find this razor quite nimble and it seems to get into the contours of the face.......
Hard to compare this razor......But with the blade modification it performed very much like a 1924 for me
I really like it........I didn't have any problems getting under my nose ......But maybe my nose is smaller than Pauls.......

Separated at birth? Star & GEM 'Little Lidless Lather Catchers' Where's the EverReady sibling?....I'm guessing there's an ER Lidless 1914 floating around somewhere...I mean, it's in the Gems, I mean Genes....8^))

There may well be ...
... although Ever Ready had their 1914 since, well, 1914 and these are both the result of access to Ever Ready patents post-1919, I think.
