Disclosure: I am reviewing this as a mere reviewer of this product. I purchased it with my own money and I have no affiliations with the manufacturer of this shaving soap or one if its vendors. I can be quite niggardly sometimes. I very much resisted the notion of pre-shave for years. I am also no-nonsense and could not stand to waste time with hot towel treatments and such. I already used Noxzema as a regular face wash as I don't wash my face in the shower with body soap. It did not occur to me to use it as a preshave. I have been using it successfully for the past couple of months. It makes a difference in the comfort of the shave. The beard is more softened and it makes the shave more comfortable than when I was just splashing water and shaving immediately. Price-- it is a terrific value. This is a classic product that has been made for decades. American buyers can get 12oz of this stuff at $3-4. UK and Canadian buyers can get it too but be prepared to spend 2-3 times at much. Even foreign buyers will benefit from the price because it is still cheaper than say Proraso pre shave, and you get 3 times the product. It lasts and lasts. Menth-heads-- if you are purchasing it for the cooling effects I would stay away. There is a strong cooling feeling the first time you use it but it goes away fast so you barely feel anything at all after using it for a while. Anyone else a fan of using Noxzema as a pre-shave?

Just so I understand correctly, are you applying this first and then lathering up, or simply washing your face with it prior to applying the lather?

I've known of folks who use noxzema as their "lather" and have claimed that it works nicely. I have no idea which one (I saw several some time ago). I almost bought some a year or so ago, but I couldn't quite convince myself to put yet another product in my shave cabinet.
Never tried it myself. I face lather and that takes care of the softening of the beard and builds lather that I'm going to use anyway. I've always seen it as the most efficient form of pre-shave. No extra anything required either.
I don't doubt that it works for you, but does it work better than just soap and water applied for the same time period to soften the beard? Just curious.

I face lather also. One of the ingredients is stearic acid-- same as many shaving soaps. Other ingredients are soybean oil and linseed oil, which is used in some pre shave oils. I am skeptical of the pricey pre-shave preparations and I thought it might be more snake oil than anything. Or rather--clever marketing. They may work, but because they are marketed a certain way they command a very high markup. Think of the "oil blotting" papers available on the market. What a rip off. Of course, that doesn't stop people from buying them, even though regular hand-drying paper towels or even Scott toilet paper are every bit as effective. Noxzema is a cheap readily available face wash that I was already using, so there was nothing to lose. It leaves absolutely no dryness. My face sheds excess oilyness and dirt without it feeling stripped and my skin feels more pliable. I have used the glycerin bars that some people report using as a pre-shave and I think them too drying and they leave tightness. I have also just let shaving soap lather sit on my face and it does soften the beard but it doesn't hydrate my skin like Noxzema does.

Interesting, but the post was about pre shave. I'm not arguing with you, but as a preshave does it work better than soap and water? You never mentioned skin hydration until now.
IMO, skin hydration is a totally different subject and best handled after the shave since so much will contact the skin from preshave to post shave. The original subject was pre shave and not skin hydration post shave.

The original subject was pre shave and not skin hydration post shave. In beard softening no, it works the same as soap and water. I am referring to skin hydration before the shave... I really don't think pre-shave is merely about beard softening, hence the reason some swear by the skin pliability benefits of a PSO. One could use Fels to soften the beard but it will make your skin dry up like a prune and I don't think that would make for a good routine... My reason for this post was merely to provide a more sensibly priced alternative to the people that use the expensive pre-shave formulations.

Hello gents. I've been away from TOST for a while, and it's good to be back. Regarding Noxzema, I have found it to be an excellent brushless shaving cream. It works splendidly. Slick, protective, and I love the menthol. A while back I stashed away 8 jars of this wonder cream. Great for travel (driving, I haven't tried taking it on a plane) or any time when I'm in the mood. I do love it. When I first brought it home several years ago and started shaving with it, my wife immediately smelled it and told me she had used it many times for shaving her legs. I have no hesitation recommending it to anyone for everyday shaving purposes.
