Here is a true like it or hate it scent. I have heard it described as nice and powdery all the way to being called cat pee.
I like the stuff although I don't use it a lot. The scent right from the bottle is not the scent that will linger. You have to let it dry down several minutes.
From what I have read this scent was made for the Hungarian Calvary. I suppose if your trying to coverup the scent of horsemen you have to work at it.
So what are your thoughts on this one? Love it? Hate it? What?

I like it, but too many times I have bought a bottle and it has a background smell of skunky beer. The only thing I can figure is it's because of the heat out here. Maybe the bottles get so hot during shipping that the alcohol heats up and you get that skunky smell, just like a case of beer that got left in the sun. Maybe they need to do what Coors used to do, ship it in refrigerated trucks to keep the freshness (Ha Ha).

On my recent trip to the US I ran across some of this in a drug store. I have certainly heard about it and I do like the bay rum pinaud. I kinda cracked the lid a tad ( : and allowed a little to dribble out and I spread it around here and there. Holy schmoley - what a smell!!!! I thought it was the most disgusting thing I had ever smelled!!!! Kind of reminded me of formaldehyde and corpses, all at the same time. Yikes!!! What had I done? Then, I gotta admit, after about an hour this stuff settled in and mellowed out somewhat and I found that I seemed to be liking it - a lot. Hmmmm.... what the heck?? I figured I would buy some and give it a try. If I was enjoying it and it turned out be something I would use that would be worth the investment - as I have yet really to come up with something that I reliably use. But, alas, I am somewhat scramble brained and forgot to go back and buy a bottle. So......I still don't know if I like the stuff!! Next time I come across a bottle for sale though I will pick it up and give it a try. If I keep having visions of corpses following behind me each time I get a whiff of myself I will probably stop using it and give the bottle a toss. But, if it grows on me like a good aged scotch, I might end up with something I will keep on hand for years to come.

Kind of reminded me of formaldehyde and corpses, all at the same time. You might not be far off the mark, RocketMan. I once read somewhere that the Veg was a favorite of embalmers for use on their "clientele" to mask the odor of decomposition. Pretty creepy!

Not to cover the dead smell either.... ;D Once this stuff drys down it is a great scent. Also remember who it was originally made for. They might come back from the grave to seek revenge on those that knock their scent.

I was pretty tentative on this stuff as it was - yikes. But, like WCHNU suggest, maybe I won't knock the stuff for reasons too 'deep' to understand!

You gents know you're enablers right!?
I've seen it in my pharmacy and I have resisted. But the endless threads about this product beg me to buy a bottle and try it.
No doubt the folks on this forum have seen the threads about Williams and the comments about it smelling the same way a urinal puck tastes (Not my comparison, just what I remember reading, or something like that ;D ). Where I'm going is that there's only one way to find out what Williams or the Veg' is like.
What if these posts are what drives Pinaud to keep making the stuff just to satisfy the folks who must smell it for themselves? Just askin'. I just might break down and buy some too, just so that I know what you all are referring to. I bet I've smelled it before since there is a sizeable French community locally.

I'm rather a fan in general, and tend to use them a lot in the humid summer months (in winter I use balms). So, here's what I know ( or think I know) about them...
There are actually four ( that I am aware of), and all but one of them includes at least two main scents, that of the lilac, and that of the vegetal, so to speak. This is all IMO, but I have tried all 4 and have 3 on hand in my personal collection.
Pinuad is the strongest, and most readily available. it starts strong, especially the vegetal aspect, and eventually becomes a powdery floral scent. it *DOES* get more "rancid" over time, or at least my bottle of it did.
The second strongest IMO is Masters, which is similar to pinuad, but a bit milder and significantly less long lasting. The scent is a bit less harsh.
Gables is milder than pinuad, and my least favorite of the four. It is sharper, with less lilac, and more vegetal.
Stephan is probably my favorite. It uses actual lilac essential oils (the other three are synthetic), and doesn't have a rancid aroma at all. The scent is pretty mild, but very pleasing.

Back in the 80s I used it a lot. Never had a problem with it. Then I stopped for a while and didn't buy any until 98. When I opened the bottle it smelled skunky. I brought it back and got another bottle which smelled fine. That's been my experience with it ever since. Sometimes I get a good bottle and sometimes it stinks. I wonder if it has a shelf life and goes rancid after a while?
