Just acquired this metal box Streamline set: It's got a red lining rather than the purple I've seen in similar sets. So how does the metal box set fit into the timeline with the white clamshell sets? Were they sold at different times or at different price points? This is probably the razor Flash Gordon used (and Ming The Merciless used a New Improved)...

Beautiful! I love Streamlines. The metal case is indeed unusual. I cannot tell from your photos, but if yours looks like the image below, then it is a second generation Streamline, circa 1950's. If the lather holes are larger and the comb is solid, that is, the slots between the teeth do not go all the way through, then you have a first generation Streamline, circa 1930's. Some say that the first generation models are slightly more aggressive. Since I only have a second generation model, I cannot say. One thing for certain: The craftsmanship on both models is exquisite! --Bob

Haven't seen another one with a red lined case anywhere else yet...

Looking again, you know what? I think that is a box for a 'Brilliant' Set. Although my 'Brilliant' Set is purple, here's a few snaps for comparison ... Streamline has a different pattern on top. The metal Streamline case is significantly larger, in fact, the 'Brilliant' case will fit into it! You can also see that the insides are different: the Streamline has a cut-out for the flip top tab and the 'Brilliant' case is open underneath the raised area, not so on the Streamline. So, lovely Streamline in a very nice 'Brilliant' Set case. What do I win?

Makes sense Paul- the case is the same but the red lining on my set is still as yet without precedent, so maybe this is another variant...

...and when was the Brilliant set issued? Is this a 50's razor in a 30's case? Brilliant! Streamline!!

It's a British thing, so nothing in Waits. I'm going to suggest the 'Brilliant' Set was later than we'd think as I have seen them for sale with cardboard outer sleeves similar to the 'Peerless' and 'Bathroom' Sets. The 'Brilliant' Set has the same handle as the 'Peerless' (the hex chain mail, not chain link ... as above) although the 'Brilliant' is heavy, the 'Peerless' is a lightweight handle.
Your case with the red lining is the same as the 'Brilliant' case I show on the left of the pictures, generally. The Streamline case I show with the more vibrant purple is larger, patterned on top, different internal layout and fits the Streamline razor bespoke.
I'd say '40s and '50s.
I think you've got a mis-matched razor and case. Nice, nevertheless.

I knew I had a picture somewhere ... The Brilliant Special. Hmm... the lining of that box and the lettering are both VERY different to the lining of the case for my Streamline . The case is certainly the same shape though, so I guess the mystery continues...

Yeah, yours is the same as my Brilliant Set case. Our Brilliant Set cases would appear to be of the same era as my Streamline case ... "Ever Ready" in an arc over "British Made".

Paul, You are right concerning the Streamline being in the Box for the Brilliant. Just Looked in my Bureau, have brought a few 1912 hidden away. Lo & Behold -in Cardboard Box labelled Brilliant Special, is a polished metal case like the one Marcus has. Guess what ? The lining is red, and to contains an ER 1912.
I am sorry i cannot show a picture, as for the life of me i cannot get pictures to load on this site.I can show it on other sites familia to you,and will do so ASAP. The Case & Razor in almost mint condition, as case comes in cloth pocket. By the way, a Streamline Fits into the case. Regards Mike B
