There was a local street fair this past weekend and I was able to get a Gem Featherweight razor for a nominal charge. I just had to rescue it as most of us would. But it's really grubby and has some rust on the base plate.
Any hints on how to rid the razor of the rust and keep it away? The rest of the cleaning should be routine but I'm worried a bit about the rust.
Thanks.

The plating on a Featherweight is fairly thick. I wonder if it's rust residue from a blade that was left in it?
Scrubbing bubbles and a junk toothbrush is what I'd use. Nothing more aggressive. Maybe some laundry or dish detergent and a long soak.
Pictures always help so that we can be of better help with something of this nature.

It's the blade rust. The head is made from brass. Brass does not rust.

Indeed, blade rust. Be especially gentle if the razor is gold plated, as gold is quite soft and the plating is incredibly thin.
