After the wash/dry cycle they wound up being 21x14, but I dried them with high heat to see what they'd be like after a practical wash. Who has time to do anything other? The fabric is cotton, but has absolutely no pile. It's smooth. I think this picture shows it. As they came out of the packaging they were of a much more open weave. Shrinking them definitely made them better. Plus they were loaded with sizing or starch or something to make them stiff. The washing removed that. If they don't work for shaving at least they'll make decent shop towels. I'm pretty sure they won't work for my hot towel face prep, since that works by using the hot water in the basin and not with steam. But that prep is almost gone until next winter because of the way I achieve it. They'll work until then. But I'll report back after the morning shave.

I'm presently searching for proper shaving towels. What I was using were shop towels from Home Depot and they are the right size IMO, but they are woefully lacking in quality. They were whitish. I won't use bleach in our septic system. But soaking and discarding the water on the lawn is OK. It's a PITA though. Anyway, I don't know if I want white because of the need for bleach. If a towel is clean that's OK by me. I like white, but bleaching is for the birds, at least for us. I'm thinking of a dark towel at this point. If anyone has an internet available favorite shave towel, please clue me in. Hello "ShadowsDad" Brian, as a new member too this forum may I suggest for a shaving towel a material called HuckaBack Linen made in Ireland. I have been wet shaving for many years and these towels are wonderful very fine linen & very tight warp and weft. Super absorbent " no lint" and will gently exfoliate the skin whilst drying. These are not ready made towels, you buy a one square yard of material and have then made up, my are 21" X 14" the cut edges of the towels are rolled and sewn. I have used these for a number of years now with no sign's of wear, and good for a further number of years. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip MJOM. I'll look for the fabric on the web.
OK, I used one of the towels this morning. As I suspected it wasn't the best for the way I hot towel face prep, but I did get it to work. Maybe they need to grow on me a bit, but right now, not having looked into huckaback linen, I think I'd prefer a terry cloth towel. Even if they need to be cut and sewn to get the right size w/o the weight. But I plan to use these for awhile, they aren't eating anything so I have nothing to lose by trying to come to grips with them while I continue my search.

It is too bad it didn't work out great for you first time. I see which towels you ordered - the striped ones. I am not a fan of those either and I mentioned that when I indicated the websites: "I know there are some people who get caught up in the fancy part of life and many of those folk will want the herringbone lintless with a blue or green stripe. Yeah they look great. But they suck in my opinion."I gotta stand by that! I agree that terry towel is the way to go. but hopefully you can get some use out of them.

Bummer! I missed that! I think the ones listed below the ones I bought would work. That may happen sooner rather than later. I'm still playing with it. FWIW, they worked fine after the shave, they just aren't the best for my hot towel face prep technique. So for summer when I don't do that anyway they'll be fine. I can't figure out why they call them barber towels. If I had to do it again I'd have ordered an assortment and just brought the discards into the shop. Live and learn. Others will learn from my mistake though, so all isn't lost.

I tried a Canon hand towel. Approx' the same dimensions of the striped towels I bought on line. W__A__Y too heavy though! Maybe if it was cut in half it would work.
I'm also trying a microfiber drying towel for autos. It's very soft and extremely absorbent, not white, powder blue. Again, way too heavy, heavier than the Canon towel actually, but if I cut them in half it'll be the right size and should work great. FWIW, the heat from the hot towel face prep lasted far longer with this towel than any other I've tried so far. This has a great deal of promise.
Any towels I slice in 2 I'll have the wizard with the sewing machine perform her magic on.
The striped towels I am learning to use, but they still aren't great for hot towel face prep. Useable for a shave w/o that step.
So I'm still on the prowl for the ultimate shave towel.

I have never even thought to see what a microfiber would do. I gotta pick a couple up to do a little work on the boat. I will give em a go myself first!!
