....One difference might be the weight of the two...... My only other 1912 is a travel set with the shorter handle so the weight difference is minimal. The Damaskeene actually fits perfectly in the travel case. I've also got a bakelite fat handled Junior but I'll leave that one out of the equation.

Blobby old boy! Waiting on the results from the 'Shave Off'. There is a lot of 'getting caught up in the excitement' when it comes to talking about the damaskeene over the regular 1912. It is good to hear that you are approaching this with an open mind. They are very similar razors indeed. There may not be a marked difference for you once you compare. Then again, the curved hood may provide an edge so to speak! Looking forward to your opinion on this.

Well I just had a shave with the Damaskeene and was going to wait until I'd had an equivalent shave (i.e. new blade, same soap, brush etc) with the 1912. News is not good. The Damaskeene gave me the same face rape shave the 1912 always did. Widespread razor burn.
However I do have to add that outside of carefully using a Featherweight, the first shave with a new blade (GEM PTFE) has the potential to do that to me regardless of the razor I'm using.
So in the interest of fairness and scientific objectivity I'm now going do the same shave and probably do the same to my face with a 1912. I'm suffering but I will persist. It's a good job I discovered SEs (the 1912 was my first SE) early on in wet shaving, when face raping was the general result whatever shaving device was used.
If you'll forgive a somewht marsupialesk (should be a word) observation, the 1912 design is the quintessential SE and it should be in my regular arsenal. I'm taking one for the marsupials amongst us.

Further to above had the same shave with a 1912. Same result I'm afraid. I will persist. Hoping it'll all get better with the second round.

Interesting. There's obviously something in your technique or shape of your face or something that just doesn't agree with the 1912. I can definitely feel a difference between the two, mainly I don't feel the blade stops as much using the Damaskeene, and I prefer the round handles over the hexagon shape of the later ones.

Yes I'll be trying different techniques in an effort to conquer the bastards! Both were exceptionally close shaves. Maybe a bit too close!

Another couple of razor burn shaves. I will keep on going for a bit but my intention of seeing if I could determine different shaving characteristics of the standard 1912 and the Damakeene has turned in to warfare. At the moment I can safely say there's not much difference. They're both torture instruments. Weird, given that I've been shaving almost exclusively with SEs for ages. I might have to become the Anti-Possum.

The weirdest thing is you have no problem shaving with a streamline or the MM CP.
I've heard of people that hate the MM and get on fine with a 1912, and vice versa though. Was surprised when you said you could shave with a MM CP and streamline just fine, but not the 1912.
I never got on well with the smaller head travel set 1912, which is the 1912 you had. But I have no problems with a damaskeene, or later model ever-ready ornate handled 1912. In fact until I got them four years ago, I couldn't get a decent shave in any razor when I was first starting out using vintage razors. I learnt to shave with a 1912. I only moved onto other razors for the closest possible shave, which the 1912 can't do for me for some reason, prefer LC or MM CP.

Well I'm happy to report I've finally had a decent 1912 shave. I'm not sure I would load a fresh blade in one but then aside from a Featherweight or Bullet tip I generally don't anyhow. ATG still fills me with trepidation but things can only get better. Another stab at the Damaskeene tomorrow. Yesterday I was ready to give them all away but I'll hold off on that for a bit. Not that I've really got much of a choice here in Australia but I might become a bit more appreciative of pouch animals after all.

Blobby, if you had said earlier that you were going to get rid of them (I hope you didn't. I don't remember reading that, but I'm old and decrepit, and have CRS. ) I would have cautioned against that.
I'm glad the 1912 is clicking for you now.
Unless you needed the $ for something else, I would have cautioned you to just put it on the shelf for a bit. Then at some later time revisit it. Sometimes one simply won't like a razor whenever it's used, but often, coming back to it later is the magic.
My Kampfe Cru-Steel is one of those razors. When I first got it, despite the fact that I love aggressive razors it and I absolutely didn't get along. Now all that is behind us because of LC month. I revisited it and it doesn't bite me any more.
Too, as you grow as a shaver razors that might have been really good a year ago no longer are as good. Time to put them up, move to others on the shelf, and revisit them some time later. They may really be the pits when you go back to them, and then you know you've outgrown them in some way.
I can't speak for everyone, but as I've grown as a shaver my tastes in razors has definitely changed. So I would advise everyone to put a razor that isn't loved at that time on the shelf and come back to it. It eats nothing when it's on the shelf waiting, and can always be sold when ever you wish.
Nothing needs to be done in a rush. Unless of course one needs the $ for something else. But I've never seen $15 being a life changer for anyone.
