May be a bit late here, but I figured Id chime in. When it comes to Scotch, I usually drink DeWars 12 year, not the regular white label. I have some of the 12 year stuff. As far as a regular drinking scotch, I usually like Cuddysark. It isnt the best, but neat, it tastes good. Every year on the 8th of November, I buy a bottle of Scotch. Usually the DeWars, or Johnny Walker black.
Now, when it comes to Bourbon, I can help there! It depends on what you want out of your bourbon. If you want something for mixing in coke, then Heaven Hill, Old Grand dad, or the like are good "mixing" bourbons. If you wanting something to sip on , try a bit of Jim Beam, or Jack Daniels. If you want something that is good to have for a special day, or after work to put your feet up, I suggest the brand "Evan Williams". There are 3 different varieties.Green, Black, or White. Most of the time I use the black label for my "sipping Whiskey" When I want to use it for mixing I will go with the black. The White is good for upscale activities. It is less well known than other makers, but still just as good for a price point. As a matter of fact, I am sipping on some Evan Williams now. On another note, skip all the "designer" flavors of bourbon or whiskey. The honey, cinnamon, etc. If you want a "flavored" whiskey, flavor it with water. I do admit, on occasion I will drink Jack Daniels, not because it is good, but because it is cheap. However, Evan Williams is the same price, and to me has a cleaner finish. I have a friend that drinks a lot of Crown Royal. I dont have much to say about Canadian whiskey except they are usually marketed as being better than American Bourbons or Whiskey, when in reality 99 percent of them are made by the same grains, and feature some of the same taste palates. Im not sold on Canadian whiskey when good American Bourbon is available, priced right, and readily available.

Evan Williams Black has been my choice for decades. At least I know that I am in good company! When I worked part time at a liquor store, I have seen all the folks come in and buy all the brands. You learn quickly what sells as the price point and what sells better than the price point. I adore Evan Williams white label,(I think it is white, or green, I may have had too much Evan Williams)can't bring myself to spend the money on it . If you ever make it down this way, I'll buy you a drink!

A veddy veddy nice blend...I think I prefer it to JW Black... Have you tried White Horse?

birdlives I have not. I do like JW Black for supping scotch, as well as cuddysark. I do have a soft spot in my heart for bourbon, it has to be right up there neck and neck with Scotch. Right now o have Evan Williams black label, and it is what I call a "sipping" bourbon. Heck, down at our family farm we make some good ole sour mash, but only for fuel purposes, of course

Thats a scrumptious single malt..a sipping Scotch worth alot more..Great bang for buck...I feel veddy safe recommending you to cop a bottle...I think there is nothing at this price point that can come close...YMMV }8^))

Well birdlives, aftery good news this evening, I had a glass of my DeWars 12 year old bleneded scotch. I will look that one up. I've not had much access to single malt scotch, and known even fewer people that drink it. I feel safe with my DeWars 12 year old. I will look for that brand next time, I go to the liquor store. Although, along that same line, it's hard to know what is a good brand, for a decent price. I don't drink enough scotch to buy top shelf, but I also don't want rock gut whiskey, either.

Then take my advice...I woulded steer you wrong. Glenmorangie 10 Glenfiddich 15 Glenlivet 12 The fiddich is the most expensive of the 3.. The Morangie is incredible for the price...I would not hesitate to offer Sean Connery a wee dram of any of those... All single malts are special...the thing is do you like fruity, honeyed or smoky?
