... I like to take some neat, then I'll add a small amount of water. Water does change the flavor of the scotch and brings other tastes to the fore..... Completely agree, I do exactly the same. I put ice in my Mint Julep only.

Bird', I just called the liquor store. Teachers, MS, and WH are on order. She didn't give me much hope re: Teachers. Said that they've ordered it before and it is always "out of stock". Maybe I'll get lucky. Hey...if they can get the Monkey Shoulder you are already lucky, everyone loves that, very smooth and as I said before, 100% single malt blend from just 3 distilleries...I want to know how you like it...And the White Horse has a high % of Laphroaig Single-Malt, very peaty, hard to find that in the less expensive blends....not for the Scotch Noob but a real treat for folks who like a smokey, peaty islay S-M...Definitely an upper tier dram...

Hey man, if you make that mint julep with Monkey Shoulder they call it a Mint Monkey....lol! I personally love a Mojito Monkey on a hot day....lmao! But hey, I'm not puttin down Bourbon...my last liquor acqusition was a bottle of Jim Beam BLACK ... A mojito on a hot day. Yess. One of my favorites on a cruise. I need to learn to drink scotch. Maybe on the rocks with a water back. Or neat with a splash. In Scotland adding a little water (a tsp max) is not looked down on and called, "Chasing the snakes away"...meaning it dilutes the alcohol burn so you can taste the Scotch..}8^)) Many Scotch lovers like their Single Malts "Straight Up". Which actually means, add Scotch and Ice...Shake...and pour through a strainer...This cools it off and "Chases the Snakes"....lol

That would be the way to put ice in scotch.

This thread is really starting to bear fruit! Some great suggestions to try Bird. I tend to be a single malt guy and drink it neat and slow. For me, the peatier the better. I don't care a lot for the prices though. Here in Canada we can sometimes get quite fleeced on liquor sales. When the White Horse was mentioned as having Laphroag in it (the wife and I refer to it as 'the Froggie' as it is more fun to say) I quickly checked our locals but can't find it yet. I will look though. Laphroag is wonderful stuff and I would certainly try a blended with that in. Also too, for that high peat taste, I absolutely love Ardbeg scotch.. YUM. I actually prefer their cheapest 10 year for some reason. But that resonates well with my cheapskate scottish roots. : )
Bird, the Monkey Shoulder sounds intriguing, but here they want a bit over 70.00 for it taxes in. However the Solera is only ten bucks more. So, at almost the same price which would you choose? I have not tried either. I still would love more affordable, but I don't really care for the Teachers or any of the Walkers. I will keep em peeled for the White Horse though. What distiller is that?
On an off note, I tried some Japanese scotch once (ya that's wierd) and it was just scheittttt.

Thats odd that the Monkey Shoulder is so expensive...It is usually 1/2. the price of the Glenfiddich Solera, but your price on the Solera is not thatout of line...The Glenfiddich 15 Solers is more fruity than peaty, but I would put it up there with the Macallan 15 which is way more expensive...
Also I notice you guys have the Johnny Walker Green Label....Thats almost impossible to find here and when you do it's cost prohibitive...It's really quite extraordinary...It's a vatted malt of only the finest Single Malts...It's priced very reasonably in Canada...If I was up there I wouldfill my trunk! It's top tier. Way too good for the Johnnie Walker Badge, not that I thought JW was bad, just not very special, but there it is...Trust me on this one...just look at whats in it...
Quote from BC Liquor Stores: Johnnie Walker Green Label Four signature malts provide the key taste influences giving this 15 year old whisky its status as a malt of substance, TALISKER™, CAOL ILA™, CRAGGANMORE™, and LINKWOOD™. Blending the whisky entirely from malts produces a smooth whisky in which the flavours of individual components are more distinctive.
Yep, a homerun...the Talisker and Caol Ila gives it the smoke and the Cragganmore makes it smooth and excessable....
Nope I just checked...we don't have it here now and the Black label is the same price as your Green Label price and the Green Label in Turkey was like $200 US...

Darn you Bird. I have been successfully taking a wee break from the scotches because of prices. I have been happily abusing Seagrams Canadian Rye at a quarter the price of a decent scotch, but you, you..... you.......... GOT ME GOING! Ok. JW Green for evening snackies tonight it is! I will certainly try your recommendation. I simply can't keep thinking about this stuff and not go get some scotch. And since I am thinking I can get a deal...... well!!! I blame Wchnu too. And you other guys. I had scotch for breakfast in Edinburgh once years ago. This crazy doctor I visited had his wife cook up breakfast with haggis in place of bacon/sausage then pours a dram of scotch on top of the haggis on each plate! Not sure I cared for it, but I have never forgotten. Green eh?

LOL! That makes it even more fun to blame you!
RM, I've heard that haggis is inedible unless one has scotch with it. I can't confirm that on way or the other, nor do I intend to try.

Ya know SD, haggis gets an undeserved bad name. In reality, if well made, it is absolutely delicious. I still pick one up once or twice a year. Just a big sausage that oven roasts nicely with a spot of water in the foil covered pan. If you ever get a chance to try it you might well enjoy it! My local liquor store has to order the JW Green label in from a bigger mainland store. Sigh. Sooooon. This place truly is the ultimate enabler I must say.
