Alan, I'm not a sophisticated scotch drinker, but I know if like something or don't, so it's pass or fail for me. Give me a taste side by side and I do better. But I lack the words to describe taste.
I think you're doing fine. I also think that given side by side taste tests that you'd do fine as well. Understand no one can tell you what's best for you; only you can do that. Glenfiddich is a fine single malt, but I don't remember any single malt that I've ever had that I didn't like. I don't think lousy single malts would sell.

I’m not a very knowledgeable scotch drinker but usually when I drink it out I go for Glenfiddich; tastes good to me and it’s the only name I remember. About 4 years ago I was shopping at Costco and bought a bottle of a scotch called Oban. It cost me $85. For all I know it could be the “Old Urinal” of scotch but it also tasted OK to me. Oban taste GREAT to me....I think that one is usually a 14 year old if I remember correctly.....Very nice...Warm tasting, like cognac...But then Oban' abv is 43%! BTW...I had a dram of Monkey Shoulder the other day...Thats very warm, I checked..it's abv is 43% aswell, yep, have to be careful with these..}8^) Yep....I'm with Brian on this one....I've never had a BAD Single Malt...I think all single malts are something special...The rigorous standarts and regulations that must be kept in Scotland, in order to call it a single malt, and the competition is SOOOO HIGH !! That any Single Malt that makes it to the maket place is usually something special.. Mini Thesis on Scotch: There are 5 regions of Scotish Distilleries... and each region's whisky has it's own taste profile because of the type of water, and flowers etc., kind of like honey... Regions: Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Isles of Islay, & Campbeltown... Some reference tastes: Speysiders are fruity and nutty, like Glenfiddich, Glenlivet...The Macallen is also a Speysider, but it's taste profile is very much influenced but the fact it's finished in Spanish Casks that had been used for Sherry therefore. You taste that along with the Speyside fruity, nutty profile... Highlands: Highland Park, Ardmore, Glenmorangie, aswell as the Oban, one of my faves which Alan brought up.. Highland single malts are like Speyside Malts, but add a little heather and vanilla and ohh yeah...Smoke! Both Speysiders and Highland Whiskys are very likable...Most people will enjoy and they are usually a good place for pros and noobs to share a dram... The Isles of Islay brings in the Smoky, Peaty flavours to the fore...A little harder on the scotch noob...Very Smoky and complex...Lagavulin and Laphroaig are great examples here...Also Brian, here is where your White Horse is blended...Thats why it may take a minute to appreciate the Horse, she has a good bit of Lagavulin in that blend... How are you getting on with the Horse anyway? The above 3 regions are the most popular all over the World..But we'll continue just for the sake of being thorough... Lowlands: Auchentoshan, and Glenfinchie...This region is famous for very bland whiskys...actually not much happening.....But sometimes bland can be better than something very busy and strong...but I don't like paying a premium for bland...YMMV And for Campbeltown, Springbank 10 or 15 and Glen Scotia....very nice..not alot to choose from but very high quality, smoky...taste profile similar to Islay Whiskys. Sorry for the long post...This is about all I know about Single Malts.... Ohh Brian, you asked about good quality inexpensive blends..Whyte & Mackay Special....excellent Highland Blend...maybe a bit hard to find though...

Alan...I am like you..I usually go for Glenfiddich...A few years ago I tried the Glenfiddich Solera 15. Man....It is just a few dollars more...But it is one of the best Single malts I've ever tasted..I'd put it up against most high dollar 18 year olds... And if you already like Glenfiddich 12....I'd bet a weeks pay, that you'll LOVE the Solera 15. I read what all is involved with the Solera process...and it's amazing. It's a very complex process with alot of "hands on", cask changing with the malt master at Glenfiddich. It really should cost alot more..But usually you can get a bottle for $50ish. Thats a great price for this high a quality.

Still searching?
When I could be bothered with whisky, my everyday "go to" whyte & MacKaye. It's cheaper than some of the names being mentioned here, but if you're already paying a premium for the import there are better. W &M is a good enough whisky, but it's not a million miles about nasty Bells. For that little bit more, you get a lot more.

I'm no longer searching Paul, but Alan might be.
I like the W&H Bird. Every time I take a taste I think that I really don't need to look any further for an everyday scotch. But I do like variety and The Ballantines, MS, and Teachers will also be stocked. I'll still buy something special as a treat once or twice a year.

Not really searching, just curious about everyone's opinions. Hmmm......you know, maybe I'll ask that guy that lives under the overpass. Every time I've seen him he reeks of alcohol and smoke so he must be an expert on Scotch. I remember once he had one of his Scotch bottles with him. Can't remember the brand he was drinking; Car ossi or something like that. It was a big bottle too and almost empty so it must be good.

Tried a New Scotch to me today....Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban....Man! All I can say Is CHECK IT OUT...super nice Single Malt... A Highland Single Malt aged 10 years in bourbon casks and aged another 2 years in Portugese Ruby Port Casks....It's only 12 years old but amazing...decent price point, between $50/60..Tastes like a Scotch in the $200 range...But be careful, alcohol content is 46 abv...It Leaves the best after taste, like..evah....truely Exceptional...
Fuzzy...this stuff would be impossible to beat with a great cigar...

It's even available in Maine!
I'll order a bottle. So far I like what you've suggested so far. I bought my 2nd bottle of WH. I was getting low on the first one. But I really don't need to order before I run out. They can get it next day.

Cool....Can't wait to see what you think...I was knocked out...and I found out that there definitely was no coloring added...This Quinta Ruban is a most beautiful deep reddish Brown...It gets that dark reddish color from being aged in those Portuguese Port Wine Casks for 2 extra years...And the aroma is heavenly...I was thinking of splashing alittle as an aftershave but it taste too good to waste...lol! I know you are a master of fragrance...you will appreciate the olfactory stimulis of this Special Single Malt...and....it has the taste profile to back it up ! imho...

It's the finest scotch to ever pass my lips. The color is astounding, the flavor is great, and the smoothness is just phenomenal. The wife did mention as she paid for it, "You're not getting that ever week.". Correct. It's not an everyday scotch. It for special occasions. I wish it had come in for Memorial Day; a toast with it then would have been appropriate.

At the top of this very page you said, and I quote: "Alan, I'm not a sophisticated Scotch drinker.." Guess all things change in due time. Glad you like it! It is good, isn't it? I think it's uniquely good within' this price point...I think you'll need to pass over a couple bills to match it... So this was a gift from "The little lady"...And what a nice gift at that....Thats funny what she said....Has she tasted it ?...I bet she changes her tune after she shares a wee dram or two....};^D

I don't carry cash, or the checkbook, I just protect them 99% of the time. She pays for all of the everyday stuff out of the same accounts that we can both use. I take the checkbook when I need steel or some such for fabrication. Most of the paying that I do I do online. She does virtually none of the online stuff. It's just the system that we fell into.
Yes, she tasted it, but I don't know that she fully appreciated it. No doubt she'll grab sips every once in a while, but not if I can help it. :-)
