It's Dads Day, I've eaten, and our kids, the dogs, tell me that it's time for few fingers of Glenmourangie (sp?).

I think Independence Day is an excellent time to break out the Glenmourangie to toast the birthday of our nation. It'll happen 4:00 ish.

BTW. @shadowsdad and all else concerned....I have mentioned Glenfiddish 15 year Solara before....well the other night I was playing a gig in a posh Wine Tasting Club...and the General Mang. Offered my wife (who was off from the casino. She always is working when I play, so it's always very cool when she gets to make a gig) So, this Manager is a very nice cat and he offers my wife any wine she might want. She told him that neither she nor I drink wine and asked if he had any single-malt. He did have a full cabinet of S-Ms and she pick the Glenfiddish 15 Solara...He sent over a large complimentary dram for her and one for me aswell...
I came off the bandstand and was surprised and delighted....Let me tell you...It is even better than I remembered...
Since then, I've copped at my favorite Scotch market....The price is unbelievable...it's actually even a couple dollars less than the Quinta Rubin....I can't recommend it enough...
Brian, I want to hear how you compare this to the Glenmorangie....}8^))

It's available in Maine, and few dollars more than the Quinta.
I'll see what the wifes reaction is to it when it comes in. I haven't bought any (quality) liquor since the Quinta so I'm due. We can do a side by each taste test.

Well, we did the side by each taste test today. It was worthless. The taste test that is. I first tasted the Solara and thought that it was smooth and extremely complex. It was as if there was a new flavor per second and they came and went. It was VERY interesting.
Then I tasted the Quinta, but my tongue was shot at that point and it was unfair. I'll need to taste one one day and the other the next. I was impressed with what I tasted in the Solara though. I don't think I've ever tasted a scotch quite like that before.
Interesting that they use a very similar process of different pre-used barrels in the production. If I understood the Solara they never draw down the barrel more than 50%, so the final product while being stated as 15 years old has some scotch in the barrel that is considerably older. Maybe I didn't understand it correctly.
Oh, by the way, the wife didn't blink. The woman at the register did mention that when I'm with her the bill is significantly higher. :-) Their business is selling liquor, don't they want to sell it? I can always buy by the case from CA (after testing and tasting first). Yeah, I've done that because Maine doesn't have everything; Barack Palinka being one type of liquor and I won't be w/o it. I got turned on to it by a Hungarian when I was in Germany and it's just fantastic. Today I need to dilute it with good quality potato vodka because the flavor is too strong (maybe just in the export version?), but diluted it's a very nice apricot brandy. They have cherry too. I think I might take a chance on a case, it can't be bad if it's anything like the apricot. I can't imagine it being anything other than good.

Arrr me matey!!! Yeah man, apricot brandy...the Pirate's drink!....I should have seen the Pirate blood in your posts....lol!
Yeah, you got the Solara thing right...Some of the malt in this Single Malt is MUCH older than 15 yrs...It's smoother than most 18yr.... I think it's safe to say that she's old enough to drive, and probably VOTE....LOL!
You killed me with what the woman at the register said....I'm cryin' ovah hee yah! Whew! You can't make up stuff like that....lol!

If you haven't tried Barack Palinka and have access give it a go. Just remember what I wrote about diluting it. It comes alive when diluted a bit. It's not at all sugary sweet.

I hear you SD/Brian....I will have to check out the Barack Palinka..Sounds captivating....
Tonight I am in the middle off the taste off....I am sampling the Solera first....Man, this is one smooth smooth Scotch.... This is going to be so interesting..... Right now I am basking in the Solera's glow....I'll be right back with how the Quinta Rubin stands up!
Wow...the Quinta Rubin does stand up....these are two fantastic Scotches....The Glenmorangie has a little smoke in the after taste that is admirable...The Solera is devoid of smoke which is true to the breed, it is a beautiful Speysider....Both are sooo smooth....
My wife gives the Solera a slight edge....I can't decide...I really like the touch of smoke in the QR...and I think the QR has tons of a rich aroma aswell...The color is comparable between the two...
I think SD is right...if you compare these two back to back you are going to waste some good scotch...You keep going back and forth...and they both are fantastic! The QR has a tad more burn because of it's above average alcohol content..and a touch of smoke... The Solera is fruity and mellow from begining to end....
Congrats SD.....Both bottles are KEEPERS...}8^)) You would have to get into the triple digets to come up with something comparable to either one....
Cheers everybody...to your health and many great shaves....

So Brian? Whats the final verdict, between this fine Glenfiddich Solera and the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban?
You are the one who suggested a TASTE-OFF! I hadn't even thought of one being a winner...ha, ha...Now I've actually given it a moment or two of thought and a bit more as an excuse to sip a wee dram...}8^))
I think, to cut to the chase...they both are great and I think they are different enought to deserve space in any Scotch lovers collection....But if I had to pick just one....well actually I find myself reaching for the Glenmorangie and my wife definitely prefers the Glenfiddich 15....So actually, it works out quite nice....well....as long as we have both bottles....lol!
So, what are your thoughts...now that you've had a minute or two to get comfortable with them...

I like them both. Both different, both are great scotches. I hope you know that I'm not a "everyone here is a winner" type of person, but in this case that's exactly what I need to announce. I just can't pick a winner. The wife can but I suspect she's a one issue scotch taster and as a smoker I wonder just what she actually tastes.
Heck, she likes my cooking so how discerning can she be?
OK, with that clearly I need some shut eye. :-)
