Can someone explain the point in using a shim on a blade?

Blade shims are most commonly used on earlier Gem style razors. The theory is that vintage blades had spines that were as much as twice as thick as the spines on modern blades. Since in many razors the spine is a factor in blade angle, the idea is that a modern shimmed blade will more closely approximate the angle (and thus the shave) of a vintage blade.
I've tried it a few times and couldn't really tell that much difference. Besides, a modern blade has a 3 facet grind and is likely made of stainless steel so even with a shim it isn't going to shave like a vintage blade.
Nonetheless, many people swear by them.

Thanks for the info Bob.

Yes, it's an mainly an angle thing. I find that I can use my 1912 pretty much flat on my face with a shim. I like that - it feels natural. A shim also reduced blade chatter (the "buttering toast" sound many people like) I've explained shims here: razors.click/Shimming/

Ive tried shimming and did not notice a difference. Also tried despining a blade in an OCMM with and without bumps. Again no difference.

I find it helps me with the stability of blades in the 1909 style and the 24 as well. I use the spine only under the spine of the active blade. It keeps the blade tightly in the frame and gives the razors a wonderful bite. I enjoy a shave with edge and this turns up the aggressiveness to the point where it helps to pay attention to your technique. Without a shim I find standard SE blades too loose for my comfort in these models particularly.

I have tried single and even double spline shims and noticed very little difference. Today I tried something completely different. After removing spline from old blade, I inserted used blade into a Brooklyn with faceted edge towards rear of razor, then put new blade on top of it. My shave was a completely different experience. I could feel the blade as with my MMOC or '24 and it shaved very close---almost aggressive. Has anyone else tried this, seems to me this trial resembles the blade thickness of older blades without changing the angle of the cutting edge.. I like it, the Brooklyn really mowed my beard closer than normal.

It seems like the spine of the reverse blade would get in the way of establishing any gap with the guard. But, I will certainly have this all tried out today for sure!! It is awesome that the sense of adventure from shaving never seems to end!! My friends all think I am nuts, and only a couple can stand listening to me yak on for at least three, maybe four whole minutes, before they get the glazed eye thing going on. Thank gawd for all you crazy people!! I will let you know here how it goes. (Just two blades as I read what you say, with the bottom one reversed.)
