I never got to the answer to the size of the smaller end thread on the Standard screw adaptor. I did email Standard, but guess what - no reply. I'm guessing at M3 or M4. Trouble is I haven't got the correct sized nut to fit the smaller thread. The one I use 'just' fits. What is the length of the 10-32 ones from China? Can't be M4. M4 is 4mm in diameter and BSW whatever is 3.97mm, so an M4 would not pass through the hole. I ordered ↪those 10-32 grub screws - they do various lengths, I went for 3/8". 10 of them for £0.99 shipped from China. Only issue is that I ordered on May 5th and estimated delivery is 24. May - 29. June - I might be in for a long wait.

I'm actually trying to write an overview of all the ways I can think of to attach a modern handle to a vintage head... (except super glue)... Here's a draft of what I've been working on: ↪ razors.click/Handles/ in case anyone is interested. It's a work in progress, but if anyone finds any blatant nonsense, please let me know. Please don't share elsewhere while it is still a draft...

I can get dirt cheap 1912s all day long in the UK, but other models are rarer and above the ridiculously low price I'm willing to pay for them. Patience and some saved ebay searches should help...

They are much easier to fit than M5 grub screws and 3/8" is quite a good length. Unsurprisingly, for razors with a #10-32 thread, #10-32 grub screws are the easiest solution. Thumbs up. Dirt cheap as well if you can wait for two weeks plus. More research required for the other thread type... still no silver bullet..

As I said the nut I use is not the correct size for the smaller thread on the Standard Razor adapter, but it tightens. When I measure the diameter the smaller thread looks wider than 3mm. But that is with a basic ruler. I may just bite the bullet and buy both M3 & M3.5 nuts.

Just go to a hardware shop (Screwfix, ToolStation, B&Q - for some reason I assume you're in the UK), show them the Standard screw and ask 'Which nuts are of this size and how much are they exactly?' then either 'Ooops - that much - sorry' (for free service) or 'Alright then... can I have a single one, please' (to be told to get lost) Do you mind if I nick and modify the pictures from your thread for a while?

While I'm waiting for my thread pitch gauges, I started by measuring the major diameter (outside of the screw) of some of my razors. The results (esp. for the Kampfe HR-14A) were shocking:
Butler: 4.02mm Comfort: 3.84mm Ever-Ready 1914: 4.01mm Kampfe HR-14A: 3.52mm Kampfe HR-14B: 4.02mm
The often claimed 5/32" are 3.97mm
The preliminary results: Neither the Butler, the 1914 nor the HR-14B would fit into a proper 5/32" hole. The Comfort would, but not perfectly - and it was made in Germany The Kampfe HR-14A has a completely different thread size - even smaller than the others.
I hereby declare that the often cited statement that those handles used a Whitworth 5/32"x24 thread is nonsense. It may have been Whitworth (time will tell), or 24 threads per inch, but it certainly wasn't 5/32" Most of the results are close enough to 4.00mm and 3.50mm that my working hypothesis is "it's something metric, but why?"
I need more data! Anyone else with digital calipers and some non-#10-32 razor handles?

My thread gauges just arrived. This is going to be tricky. I need to grow at least one extra hand. Required: One hand for the handle One hand for the gauge One hand for the magnifying glass Or two hands for a camera
It doesn't help that some of the handles have only two thread crests.
Preliminary result: 24 threads per inch seems about right No idea about thread shape yet. How am I ever going to tell the difference? I'm not sure I'm ready to buy a microscope.

I will need to take handles to work and measure them on our competitor to get the thread angles and exact pitch. I do not have the variety of handles you do. But I will see what I can come up with.

I don't have that many handles really. If we could settle the 'Whitworth question' that would be great. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if it's BSW 5/32"x24 or M4x1.0 or something else that doesn't exist. Knowing the exact size won't help to find non-existing thread adapters. Those early razor guys just made it up as they went along. Otto Kampfe: Hey, a guy from the future has just called. Want's to know what thread standard we are using for our handles. Wilhelm Kampfe: Thread what? Frederick Kampfe: Hahahahahahahahahaha. They all join in.
