I've done a little research, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand we call these 1924s or Shovelheads, although I think they're seen as early as 1919. I think it was the Sears catalog of 1924 that launched them into popularity. I also understand there are several variations with regard to the comb being either curved or squared. I've purchased these 2 off ebay. I can tell the handles won't likely be interchangeable because the one with the Bakelite handle doesn't appear to have the raised pillar that the other one does. Am I correct so far?My questions concerning the combs: Does the bakelite-handled version have a squared comb and does the other one have a curved comb? Now regarding nomenclature: We call them 1924s or Shovelheads (or is it Shovel Head?). What were they formally called? (The reason I ask about the moniker is I'm trying to differentiate between colloquial references. For example, we all know what a "Streamline" is, but the same razor was made with the Gem and Every-Ready branding. It turns out "Streamline" is a reference to the packaging, and the razor was never really given a name beyond its Gem or Ever-Ready brand.) So is this a curved comb?Is this a squared comb?Am I correct in the assumption that these handles won't be interchangeable?

I have both also, the handles interchange without issue, although I don’t have a Bakelite handle. Mine have a slight difference in the top caps as well, the square tooth has a slightly taller top cap giving a slightly different shaving angle

I have never seen the 24 with that bakelite handle. I have several 1912's with it though. I call them a 1924 because of the pat date. I will let others comment on the different heads and such. I am not an expert on the 24.

Well, they've both arrived and I've cleaned them up. They're pretty good specimens. The one with the pillar base has some chrome plate cracking, but nothing's flaked off yet. They're both structurally sound. The handles are not interchangeable. The thread stem on the metal handle is too long to fit on the head with the flat base. The stem bottoms out before completely being threaded. I've never seen one with a Bakelite handle. I wonder if it's stock or if it was taken from a another razor. Can anyone shed some light on the possible origins of the Bakelite handle?

My favorite 1912 as a matter of fact. I have never seen it on another head.

120inna55 I think I have a spare 1924 handle that fits the short collar. If you want it I will see if I can dig it up.

I may very well have something that fits, I just haven't gone through the effort of looking just just yet. I'm in the process of selling off my DEs (vintage and otherwise), because I can't see myself going back to them. Some are harder to let go than others, though. Anyway, in my sorting through them, I'll likely find something that will work.

They are coming less and less as I have already got most of the guys in my area at work, but I still try to convert strangers at the local stores when the subject of shaving comes up.
