Alum is sold in the spice isle of the grocery store. It's often used in pickling but it's also great for canker sores.
It's great as a skin antiseptic and yes it's used in DIY skin tightening recipes. But I'm not sure a gram in a bottle is enough to do any good. It also depends on the size of the bottle.
But it may be your dad is just less prone to wrinkles and sages as well. My mum hardly had a wrinkle until she went through chemo at 65 and my dad is 74 and could easily pass off for someone 15-20 years younger. Not just physically fit, but also he doesn't have the wrinkles and sages. Ok he doesn't have much gray hair either! But while some of that is genetic i think some (okay a lot) of that has to do with how we treat our bodies and what we eat and put into it.

FWIW, alum can mean at least 2 different chemical compounds. One is an aluminum compound and another is the potassium one. The aluminum is used to staunch bleeding in the form of a stick, matches or swabs and the other is used on the face in a block or under the arms. I believe the aluminum one is what you'll find for pickling. But read the label.

What i buy in the store is with the rest of the spices and the label says alum. What people are using in the DIY skin tightening recipes is using the one for pickling which is also used as an antiseptic and good for cancer sores.

You were right Krissy, I went to the grocery store and there it was. I'm not sure if it will do any thing or not but I'm going to try it out of curiousity. I've got an empty Humphreys 10 once bottle. I'll put some Dickensons in it then add the alum. I'll add a teaspoon of alum to see what it does. I need to be careful here. Did anyone ever see the episode of the Three Stooges where they are hired to cook and serve dinner at some society ladies house? They make lemonade and by mistake use alum instead of sugar. Everyone who drinks it gets a puckered mouth and starts talking funny. I don't want that to happen to me! I'll keep you posted.

Haven't tried this yet, been doing a comparison of the HFT and Featherweight and didn't want to add any variables that would confuse the issue. Probably next week, I'll update as I do.

Alan, I applaud your methodical look at these razors and would love to hear what you conclude. Can I ask how you are doing the comparison? The gory details man!! thnx!! (I don't mean to hijack this thread, but.....)

I'm finished with the comparison and I'll post the results later today. I was really surprised!
I'll try the alum and Witch Hazel tomorrow.

Did you get a chance to check out the Alum & WH ? I know my Pop swore by it...I would love to know what you think...Dad use to say it was a residual effect though...He would use it all the time, so you might not notice right off the bat...

I try it and love it. Very gentle but leaves skin moisturised, not irritated and soft. Great stuff!

Witch hazel is a revelation. I especially like the Thayer's Medicated. Also tried the After Shave, the Cucumber and the Lemon. In addition to that I have done a couple of home brews with menthol crystals and essential oils added to neat, unadulterated WH. So I have a Lemon, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus menthol WH and a Sandalwood and Menthol WH (very gentle menthol in this one), which are great. WH in one form or another is my general immediate after shave treatment.

How strong a scent is the cucumber version Jon? I ask because I've just sold my rose thayers as my wife really hated the scent. My sense of smell isn't that great so it didn't smell very strong to me. Maybe I should try the unscented version; witch hazel has a pretty strong smell though, I don't want to buy the unscented to find that it just smells of witch hazel. I made my own toner before, 50% witch hazel and 50% rose water. It smelled very strongly of witch hazel.

Glad it works for you. I love my rose and have used the lemon. Mostly though I just use the cheap dollar store stuff. If the scent is bad it does not last.
