I'm holding out for a Hero to shave me just right. OK, so I'm no Bonnie Tyler but I found a Hero (razor) at a little bar/junk shop a couple towns over. Funny place, I'll be going back often. The guy letting me into display cases and who rang me up was carrying a bottle of Budweiser the whole time. I also found a great looking Junior Bar and a Zig-Zag stropper in nice shape, pics to come after they get cleaned up! I'm going to give the Hero a try for tomorrow's shave. Here's some pics... More to come in the appropriate areas.

Wow, don't see those very often. I'm curious how it shaves.

It is nice to see you around MrGuy. Thanks for posting this wonderful lather catcher! This would have been selling before WW1 and is the work of one of the Kampfe Bros. Waldo, or Jimbo, or Mary Ellen, wait, no, Richard!! These pre-war, New York, SE razor makers were in bed together more often than Paris Hilton and her favorite fuzzy puppet. I think ShadowsDad has a thread here about the Star Cru-Steel. Same razor, same designer, same bat channel. It would be nice to have both of those razors together on my shelf! Please do post about your experience! And what about the Jr Bar?? We gotta pump up the vintage MrGuy!!!

I'm really enjoying the shaves with the Hero. I've only had a couple so far, but no irritation at all, perfectly smooth even in the tough spots. I'm going to have to look into plating options, since I can tell the water isn't doing this razor any favors. I sure would hate to have this little beauty dissolve into nothing.

This razor would be a great candidate for a replate. Well worth it as you'd have a lovely piece. Then again, it isn't lacking any character at this point!

Ya, I really like keeping a razor in its "natural" 100 year (more or less) old state. I don't care how beat up it looks, but rather I'm more concerned that using it will cause too much corrosion and render the razor useless. If anyone has any suggestions for a non-plating yet protective option, I'd love to hear it.

I'd say a re-plate is the only real option, unless you want to try keeping it coated in something like WD40, or a gun oil to keep moisture from the surface

I was thinking about wax. I have a can of Meguiar's some where around here. It would be worth a shot, can't really think of any damage it would do.

It's taken over 100yrs to get where it is now, probably stored away in dank, damp cupboards and most likely unused for the majority of that time. I've found with any razors I have with plate loss, that using them, rinsing them properly, storage in dry conditions and the occasional clean up and rub down with some toothpaste, invariably makes them almost look brand new. I doubt with appropriate care you'll notice any deterioration in plate loss in your life time.

Well yes, maybe no plate loss, but that doesn't address the issue that it's a steel razor. The plating is there to keep the steel from rusting. Once it begins under the plating there's no stopping it short of major surgery. That's the nature of rust.
FWIW, the corrosion on my Kampfe wasn't able to be fully fixed, it was so far gone. It's been arrested though. The solution is to fix the plating before the problem occurs IMO. A brass razor, no big deal maybe since it doesn't corrode under the plating.
FWIW, the plater wasn't happy with the job on the handle of the ER '06, so he stripped it and did it again. That's what's been taking the time. Well, that, plus it's not his occupation, but something he does 'cause he wants to.

I like to keep things as they are...But this 'Hero' is a special case...For one...It's Steel, not brass...and once the rusting starts.....Well its way too hip to gamble with...I say remove the rust and plate it....I think if you only plate it once every 100 years or so.... This razor deserves another 100 years of making it's owner's mornings special....

This razor deserves another 100 years of making it's owner's mornings special.... But then again...I can't tell from the photos just what the rust condition is...but if it's significant....plate and then enjoy daily with no worries...
