Well, since I got a new job (a much better one at that) working as a clerk inna mom and pop hardware store, which beats layin' carpet and getting paid "under the table". With my first legal pay check in more than a year I decided to spring for an extra special treat. I bought a bottle of Whiskey that I've been dying to try for a while, but it is hard to get where I live so we were in Gainesville today and there is a Total Wines and More and they carry almost every brand of Whisk(e)y you can imagine and so I plunked down my $56 hard earned cash and bought 750 ml of one of the best tasting Irish Whiskies made! Its called Connemara it is made in the Cooley Distillery in Dundalk and is part of the Kilbeggin stable of labels. Connemara is the only peated Whiskey made in Ireland it also a Single Malt that is twice distilled in Pot Stills rather than in Column Stills, this leaves more flavor in the new make before the ageing process begins in the casks.
This Whiskey is very smooth, with a really nice smokey flavor, it is not quite as heavy feeling as an Islay in terms of body but it is much heavier than most of the Irish blended Whiskies I've had. Another difference between Connemara and the Islay Whiskys I've had is that there is no kelp notes (I do like those but don't miss them in this case) so that leaves more of the sweet biscutty/cereal barley taste to just shine right through. All in all this is one to remember.

I do like a good Irish Whiskey. I will have to give it a try. Wonder if I can find it in my area.

Congratulations on the new job! That whisky sounds amazing! Peated whiskys are my favorite, and I appreciate the tip.

So you live in the San Antonio area or there abouts, (going by your profile which says South East Central Texas), it's a big City so I'm sure somewhere in that Big City there is a store that sells Connemara since ultimately it is made by Beam/Suntory (a huge multi-national that makes lots and lots of Whisk(e)y and money too).
Anyway it is worth hunting down if you have the chance to do so.

I'm 90 miles from Houston, 110 miles from Austin, and 130 miles from Dallas. I'm sure I can find some, just have to do some digging.

Nice stuff! I don't think I've ever tasted Irish whiskey like that, but I must confess that I don't drink Irish very much.

@shadowsdad, I'm not big on Irish either, I like heavier flavors (Islays and Ryes are my favorite). I also love single malts regardless of origin and as far as they go Connemara and Old Bushmills 10 YO are among the best from Ireland.

I'd like to clarify, Irish Whiskey is a good in-betweener (personal view only) because the basic pallet is malted barley, so it leans towards Scotch sometimes; but the bottlers can use many different components, including grain neutral spirits Irishes can lean towards Bourbon too! So they are rather versitile, but not so well defined. The same thing can be said of Canadian Whisk(e)y.
