Or, how I made a pretty good brush into a really, really good brush! I picked up this vintage Dubl Duck #4 about a year and a half ago. This style of handle is my favorite, and I like using it, but the knot was just a little bit too long so it had pretty much been relegated to the role of display. I decided to put it back into the rotation so I thought I'd try shortening the knot a little so I trimmed about an inch off and now it is much easier to load and build lather in a bowl with. Here's a pic I took right after I bought it. Here it is now after a haircut.

I have a #5. Looks about the same as the original one there. Love the thing.

Tom,
Good idea. I'm gonna try that out on the next worn out antique store brush. Nice!

This one wasn't worn out at all, I just thought the bristles were too long. This length just makes it more controllable.

Can that surgery be successfully done to a boar and get something useable? Anybody know?

I've heard of people doing it, with HT now added to the list, but I haven't yet heard any end results. Boar does soften up over time but not sure if that's the case with freshly cut bristle. We'll hear I quess.

The DD is boar, but I wouldn't consider it scritchy at all, but when I apply lather I'm strictly a painter so that's not really an issue.

OK then, it's decided. I was sent a problem brush to remove the knot and to reknot the handle. There's nothing to lose, the brush is the pits the way it is. I'll trim some of it off and see what happens.
I just removed maybe 7 mms of the loft. It did OK in a hand lather. I'll try it on the face tomorrow and see what happens.

When you clip the bristles will the ends split again like the tips did before? Hope that is an understandable question.
