John, I have no idea if you paid too much or not, but I think I would have paid that for it. It's a thing of beauty. If you wanted it badly enough and had the $ (ie. didn't not put food on the table to get it) , well, it's worth it then. Did I mention how drop dead gorgeous it is!? If I had been looking over the e-bay offerings (and bidding) you would have been in trouble.

I don't think you overpaid, that's a pretty good price for a cased razor in that condition, but, that's technically not a Damaskeene. Sorry. That 1912 frame has a shorter handle and was sold in the mid 20's in several sets, that case was called the Peerless. The only ones that Gem advertised as the Damaskeene razor was the first 1912's that were made before they changed the handle and cover plate after the 1919 merger like in this ad.

Dang John! No Damaskeene! Now you'll have to sell it!
Remember, I have first refusal on that incredibly ugly set.

@#!&^% *&%#$$@ ^&*(&%^%# spit spit!! WHAT!? NOT A DAMASKEENE?? GRUMBLE, DEEP BREATH....
O K.
Will it at least shave comparably to a REAL Damaskeene?
LOL! This kinda stuff always happens to me. It even says, Damaskeene, right on it.
Brian, thanks for the compliment on the good looking non-Damaskeene set. grin. If it doesn't shave to my liking, I might put it up for sale. I like pretty razors, but I'm a "user" first and foremost. It's like havin' a dog that don't hunt. Just doesn't make any sense to me -- probably my red neck roots showing.
You guys! shakes head, walks away mumbling...

Even if it isn't a true Damaskeene, it's a beautiful piece of equipment, John. No way you overpaid on that one, at least not in my book. Hope it shaves as great as it looks.

Very nice Razor!!! HoosierTrooper is indeed correct - that particular razor was not marketed as a Damaskeene Razor. However, the razor frame is identical to the Damaskeene - don't you agree HT? Is the middle portion of the frame narrower on yours?? If not quite the same, it is pretty darn close to the head that all the Dammy Lovers rave about. In fact, I would think that there are a lot of uncased 'Damaskeene 1912s' out there - people seem to refer to a Gem as damaskeene if it has the 1912 stamped frame with the curved cover plate. Most of the positive comments that come from people who appreciate the damaskeene refer in fact to the curved cover plate - not really anything else I have ever noticed. Let me know if you disagree HT, and any and all comers!! But for all intents and purposes of shaving - this razor is a damaskeene razor. (Maybe a 'little D' damaskeene yeah? Real nice catch - Regardless of the subtledties, you are going to really enjoy this razor!!!!

Very nice set.. it may not be in the Damaskeene set but it looks like the same razor head.. I think that is what is important. You will love it with the carbon blades I sent.... ok even with the pellas. ;D Great catch that price is ok too.

Thanks Stljeff! It sure looks purdy on the ebay pics. Can't wait till it gets here!
Fuzzy, I'm glad to hear it wasn't too much to pay. I see all these great SEs going for dirt cheap and paid $25 for that... in the end all that matters is that it's worth it to you. I think this will be. Can't wait to try it with some of the blades you sent!
Rocketman, "little d" it is. Now we have an official name for this non-damaskeene razor. hehe.
Hoosier Trooper: that's a fine lookin' razor pic that you posted. Can't wait.
Brian, looks like you probably won't have to worry about buying this set from me. Sounds like I should love it. I'll let you know next time I see one just like it on the 'bay. Yeah, that'll happen!

Here's a picture of mine next to a full blown Damaskeene and yes, the frame is more compact on mine as you can see. John's appears to be full size because of the wording stamped on it. And I was mistaken on the handle length, they are the same. That must be one of those optical delusions since the frame is smaller. In addition to the curved cover plate I like the round, knurled handle of the D more than the hexagon shape of the later ones.

Here's another set I have that has the round cover plate like the Damaskeene, but doesn't have the Damaskeene ad inside. I believe I'll use this one tomorrow!

Tom, just to be clear, mine does have the Damaskeene stamp inside. Is it any closer to being a "real Damaskeene"? Not a big deal if it isn't, just wanted to clarify.
Man, I like both of those. I think that round knurled handle would be nice. I wonder if Bob of Bob's Razor Works ever makes his handles for SEs?

Well, like I said and the RocketDood agrees, these sets weren't advertised by Gem as a "Damaskeene Razor" like the earlier ones were. And the blade boxes of the earlier ones had the word Damaskeene on them, unlike the later ones that were named after the case they came in. Physically, the frame is the same, it just has a different handle. So technically I say no. Tom, just to be clear, mine does have the Damaskeene stamp inside.
