Recently received a Vie-Long 50/50 mane/tail horse hair brush. It's got a good feel and think I'm going to really like it.
BUT, the darn thing smells horrible! I've hand lathered it about 6-7 times with various scented soaps and even washed it out with Dawn dish soap.
It still stinks!
What's a guy supposed to do?

I don't advised this, but it worked for me. I load the brush with whatever hard soap.you have, then I put it in whatever cup you don't mind using. I let it sit for 3 or 4 days, then was it out. I also use main and tail shampoo from the vets office to destink.

An overnight with a Maca Root SC lather left on the brush helped a lot. Will do that a few more times and should be ready to go by end of the week.

I just used a horse hair brush in todays shaving vid. To get it ready I used hot water to soak it. After each soak I would lather it up with prorasso green. Let that sit for an hour. Then clean and dry the brush. I did this 4 or 5 times an evening for 3 or 4 days. Stink comes from bacteria. The bacteria live deep in the hair shaft. You have to soak it to penetrate the outer surface, then put a soap in there to kill bacteria. Then squeeze it all out and dry as fast as possible to deter further bacterial growth. My brush smells nice and soapy now. Wet or dry.

I just use them until it clears up. Shampoo several times between uses. Enjoyed reading some different ways of doing things.
I love my horse brushes. Hope it does good for you.

Deodorizing dog shampoo from Walmart works fantastic to get the smell out of animal hair brushes.

Deodorizing dog shampoo from Walmart works fantastic to get the smell out of animal hair brushes. And it also works for dogs..... I don't recommend trying to use it on cats however.

Same as the others, use the brush and it will go away in time. In some cases, I do a soak in diluted white vinegar then rinse well and dry.
