Years ago I used to use hand/bath soap for shaving when camping. I did this to minimize the amount of stuff I had to pack. The lather was best from bath soaps with glycerin, but even that lather didn't last. I used Ivory many times but had to be sure to use hot water or the lather would be gone in an instant. Now I take some of those small sample discs filled with real shave soap. So, in a pinch I can do it, but as long as I have regulat shave soap I'll use that.

That Ivory ad is AWESOME.!!!! But I bet that is not the same soap we can buy today. You are correct Sir... I've often used Ivory soap for head shaves in the shower or bath because it's there,it's convenient and it seemed to work ok.This morning I moved the last bit of Williams left in my shaving mug into a plastic coffee cup and tried using that.I'm here to testify that Williams offered a lot more cushion and glide on my noggin than Ivory.

Since starting this thread I've also used a glycerine soap that I get from the supermarket. Heck, I use it on my face so it was an obvious candidate after what Krissy wrote. It's Clearly Natural brand. About $1.50 or less per bar depending on where you obtain it.
It's really quite a good shave soap. Since discovering it I've made a menthol version (melt, add menthol, let harden, test and remelt, add more menthol if required) and a Kramperts Finest Bay Rum scented version. You'll be surprised at how good this CN glycerine soap is for shaving.
While hand soap is just a lark because I have a curious nature, and discovered the CN glycerine soap was great for shaving, I continue to use it because it's really good.

I used the Clearly Natural Glycerine soap for a while,it does work well.I'm not sure why I haven't replaced it except when talking razors on these boards for me it seems like it might be easier for others to relate to my setup when it includes an easily identifiable brand name.
The melt & pour nature of CN makes it a good choice for making your own shave sticks.

One thing I don't like about it. I can't stock up on it. I find that it sweats terribly in storage. So it's pretty much just buy it as I need it. The prepper in me hates that.

I am pretty sure I have never seen this brand up in Canada. Does anybody out there from Canada know if this is available anywhere??
I have tried pure glycerin translucent soaps, but was not overly happy with the result. I do use glycerin soap bars though for a pre-wash/prep when I have the luxury of extra time. Works like a darn to soften the stubble.

I did a few years ago when I was near the end of my disposable/cartridge razor days. Ran out of canned goo and decided to lather up with some Irish Spring bath soap.
Well I got some lather, but not much and not at all thick. Not the greatest shave by any means but better than not being shaved that day as I had to visit a client.
Not something that I recommend at all except in the case of such an emergency.

Yeah Irish Spring is the pits used as shave soap. I didn't get far with it either and at times I suspect our soft water can lather pure lard.

I used the clearly natural for a bit. Worked ok. But it is back to a bath soap. Will work good if I get in a bind and maybe a travel soap as it can be both shave and bath soap.

Back when I was fiddle faddeling with a brush and mug I used the ends of the bath soaps to shave. Mostly Dial and Ivory, the little pieces ended up in my cup. Still better than goo in a can... Didn't even know what wet shaving was then. I bought a brush one day because I thought it would be cool... One good thing about my time back then was I learned how to make lather...
To the present. I am a firm believer in Clearly Natural. I use it as a pre wash every time I shave. I have melted it, added scents, mixed it with VdH. I have 8 or so pucks wrapped in wax paper up there in my nook right now that I made myself. Clubman, Bay Rum, Old Spice, Eucalyptus, Lavender... It works good for me but as of now I have so many bought soaps and creams that I really don't use it much anymore. I agree with Brian SD. That stuff does sweat a bit. I haven't tried any Ulta-lathered yet but guess where I'm going?

Now that is something I don't conciously recall trying to make an UL with. Please let us know how you make out.
I use the hand soap that began this thread to break in new boars mostly now. Everytime I do that I think I should try it for lathering on my face, but yup, I have so many real shave soaps it's always put on a back burner and forgotten.
Right now I'm trying to use up 4 soaps so my rotation consists of those except for Sunday when I allow myself to use anything in the cabinet. I eagerly anticipate finishing those 4 soaps. They aren't terrible, just not as good as others that I see looking back at me whenever I open the cabinet.
