I've been on a 'Scent-Safari' my whole life. With 'Hind-sight' being 20/20; the standouts have been, Guerlain's Habit Rouge, Caron Pour Un Homme, Tom Ford's Noir EdT, Shalimar EdP... Do we see a pattern developing here?
So this year got me to thinking. Everyone of these scents share a similar scent pyramid and are either direct or indirect descendants of Guerlain's Jicky. The first, complex perfume, the first aromatic fougere, and the first oriental that debuted in 1889 at the Worlds Fair along with the Effle Tower and the opening of the Moulin Rouge.
Jicky has had so many male and female celebrities call this their signature scent. And there is so much history written about Jicky, I leave that for future googlings...
Now for so many years, I've been looking to try Jicky. I've read so many polorizing things. The great perfume critic Luca Turin has written much about Jicky. And he once said that whether it was love at first sniff or not..he would "dare anybody to spray it on their wrist the first time and walk down the street and act like something big had not just happened!" Lol! Whew!
Of course now I'm dying to try it, but now I can never find a tester of it anywhere. And when I'm in Paris, I don't have time to go to the Guerlain botique...They no longer market the EdP in the US. I have even voiced a thought to make a special trip to Paris, just to try Jicky sometime. lmao!!
This year, I found a 3.5 oz bottle of Jicky EdP in my stocking! Woo Hooo! Actually, two days before Christmas, and I had a gig to go to, but I couldn't wait. Boom, a blind spritz on each wrist and out the door, for better or worse!
Wow! I can see it all now...First off, Blast of a very high quality citrus, bergamot & limon...Then theres the best powdery lavender ever. Theres something a little floral, but the lavender is the star..then some dusty vanilla...
This juice definitely takes you on a trip. But the drydown is so seamless and so well put together, that it's very hard for me to pick out specific notes
Everything is also really lowkey...The lavender makes this like a high quality barbershop scent. There is nothing perfumy about Jicky. The patchoulie in this, when mixed with the civet and lavender, makes the heart a little dirty, in a good way. And very masculine. I had heard this was always a unisex scent. For awhile it was marketed as a woman's scent. I don't see it...If anything this is the perfect man's cologne.
The basenotes are very close to the skin. After 3 hours you think it's gone...But then boom! You really catch a great powdery lavender smoky vanilla smell that lets you know, shes still there.
Final conclusion...It's gonna take awhile to thoroughly understand Jicky. It's such a personality, a little different each time I try it. But consistently great! Very comfortable, and makes me happy and relaxed. It made me remark that this must be what Heaven smells like!...This is my current favorite!
