Greetings and salivations,
I recently received a very nice Gem Damaskeen. This morning I shaved with it and will later tell you all about it (and post pics too). Just wanted to get things started, but want to also see what you all have to say about these razors, as a kind of an intro to the story.

I'm really in snail mode right now, it's been a busy day. Anyway the shave I got with my Damanskee was Okay it seems to me to be an adequate shaver. It has a funny angle that forces you to ride the cap. Overall it is a likable machine. It didn't knock my socks off, but it didn't let me down either. I feel like I go a run of the mill shave from it. It is a neat old razor that does a nice job of giving you a fair shave. For a truly great Shave I go to either my Schick G4 or my favorite unmentionable but for a good old fashion so so shave this razor does it. I probably won't use this thing very much, (like my EverReady) These things are primitive and kinda funky and kinda scary pieces that have no elegance whatsoever. It's like the difference between a model T Ford and a Lotus 7 or a Polaroid and a Leica M6.

Perhaps putting it away for a while and then coming back may change an opinion. What blade did you use? Stainless or Carbon? I noticed for whatever reason, it seemed to shave better for me at least, with a carbon blade.

The Dammy is considered by most to be a top of the line razor. I have a OC and a regular one that is in a military set. Like OS I prefer carbon steel blades. Then again I am a Carbon Steel fan all the way around in SE blades.

Hello All,
The thing about most razors, for me is, which one is going to shave me well (meaning close) under my jaw and chin, the whole area that follows from my ear to the point of my chin. Another factor seems ergnomics (hand feel) the way razors like the Damaskeen and EveReady is that their shape just seem akward and cumbersome. Many unmentionables I have have comfort issues too. The heaviness of my stubble is also a factor, some are great with a lot and others little. My G4 and now that I got tips from jayaruh my E2b and my unmentionables that are about the same size an weight work great. Could just be me but many great razors just don't do what I want. The ones that do the best are regarded as moderate performers by many people. So what can I say? I guess it all is a matter of YMMV. As the Cricket fan may say "different strokes for different blokes"! Obviously I could elaborate but that would involve naming my unmentionables which would not do. Moving on...

These things are primitive and kinda funky and kinda scary pieces that have no elegance whatsoever. It's like the difference between a model T Ford and a Lotus 7 or a Polaroid and a Leica M6. While I didn't have the same experience with my Damaskeene -- I have always thoroughly enjoyed my shaves and it remains one of my favorites -- I certainly respect your experiences and shave preferences. What I must disagree with is the "no elegance whatsoever" comment. Perhaps it's our difference lies in the varied definitions of the word "elegance": 1. "the quality of being graceful and stylish in appearance or manner; style" 2. "the quality of being pleasingly ingenious and simple; neatness" From my perspective, the Dammy, the Model T, and even the Polaroid (in it's own way) are elegant regardless of the definition used (1 or 2); but I will (grudgingly) concede that some may not feel like the first definition applies to those items. Still, I think OS' suggestion of setting it aside and trying it again later is a good one...you're opinion may change/evolve with time. I know mine has -- over 30 years ago, I was a proud owner of a 1984 Pontiac Fiero

Different folks like different things. No matter what you like vs don't like, it's all preference. I for the longest didn't like my ever ready razor. Thought it was a horrible shaver, and set it aside for a long while. I recently came back to it, and while it's still not my favorite, it has moved up from unacceptable.

The guy that taught me the ins and outs of using classic film cameras had a great answer to the question "It's harder to do, it takes longer, could cost you more and the results are the same. Why do you do it?" The answer is... 'cause it's more funner this way, I like it and it doesn't cost you a thing.

BTW I test drove a Fiero back in '83 din't fit into the car comfortably, cars like the MG B and TR 4 were roomier. I miss my Leica M6 soooo much, I had to give it you due to long term unemployment my Leica kit brought me in $3500 and that kept me afloat till I got back on my feet. Before to long I have an Leica III C kit again. Those are very small compact and excellent cameras, I don't need the M6 heft (besides it was so expensive that I was always worried about damaging it or having it stolen when I was out and about with it)!
