I know the mane hair is softer and the tail is scrithy but does the tail hair ever soften up or is it always going to be scratchy?

My experience is that it may, emphasis, soften a tiny bit but the tail hair with always have a scratch feel to it. I use painter motions and that practically eliminates that issue. Nice brushes though!

Nice brushes though! I got that. Just like to do the scrubby thing and that's when it feels scratchy. Oh well, a painting we will go then

A horse is a horse of course, of course... Really trying not to finish that song. Lol. I appreciate horse brushes to being a different face/head feel on their own. Not quite badger. Not quite boar. Somewhere in the middle.

The cremo branded vie-long horse brush I have is less scratchy than my other Vie-long. Neither one of them however is good for splaying. They are good painting brushes, but they are scratchy.

I just acquired a horse hair brush. I never really knew much about horse hair, mostly just boar or badger. Horse hair seems like another good option, just lesser known. I have one synthetic. It works fine, but I just like what nature provides better. Here is a video I did run across that had some good brush care info. It was about horse hair, but some of it could be applied to other hair types. Here is a forum post from the owner of Vie Long that gives some good info on horse hair used in the brushes. shavenook.com/showthread.php?tid=21046

Had two horse brushes, now just one, too soft! Great lather, nice and big and full and thick, but no backbone at all!
If it ain't boar, it ain't for me!

mrconklin I have both the brush in the video, as well as the cremo brush. I will try to make a video using them both, if I can remember. To quote TobyC, neither one of them have the backbone of a good dense badger or boar, but I still like them.
