Anyone know if the CVS blades are the same as the GEM Stainless Steel? Whatever they are, I used one today and got a great shave.

Basically the CVS are the Gem Carbon Blades. CVS blades are made by Accutech or something to that point. Gem Treet PAL are all made by Personna which I believe was bought by accutech. Hopefully somebody really in the know can get this straightened out All that matters is you got a great shave and now have a source for blades. Tom

Ditto on what Sir Tom said. There are quite a few mergers, and it gets rather convoluted. I always get great shaves with those blades, no matter the maker.

Just checked razor quick to make sure the blade had not started to rust as I didn't dry it. All good. Will make sure to dry in the future. These sure seem smooth to me.

They are good from the start. Last me a solid 6 3 pass shaves. The stainless I find are a bit rough the first 2 shaves. Then mellow out. Then last for who knows.

The early history is complicated and out of GEM, Ever-Ready and Star in 1919, the American Safety Razor Company emerged. In 1953, ASR purchased the Pal Blade Company, who owned the Pal, Treet and Personna brands. In 1960, Philip Morris bought ASR. In 1977, there was a management buyout and some executives bought the Personna American Safety Razor Company from Philip Morris. In 2011, they went belly up and Energizer bought the remains. In 2015, Energizer spun of its personal care division as Edgewell Personal Care, who sold the blade division to an investment group who called it AccuTec. So, GEM, Personna, Treet, Pal... all the same company. Long may they be in business!
At least that's my understanding...

Old vintage blades and hone and strop😳 Great question. I would just stop shaving or use an ax

Sir Tom, My thoughts are exactly opposite of yours. I find the stainless to be smoother on the 1st shave than the Carbon steel. I do however think the Carbon hits it's sweet spot on about shave number 5 or 6 and then down from there.
I really should keep better notes on how many shaves I get. I usually just shave til it pulls then replace.

I would use GEM stainless blades. I have enough for several decades.

Thanks ordinaryshaver! I am just making sure I do not use a paint scraper blade! So what happened to @flintstone? Yes, not to disparage a vendor, but I used a site called TryABlade and picked up 4 blades to try. They were listed with these names, but I'm not sure if their provenance was correct: Gem Carbon, Gem Stainless, Gem Stainless Steel PTFE, and Pal Blue Carbon. The first 2 in the list (at least the ones I got) were not shaving blades, but rather only for industrial use. This forum (and the massive amount of irritation I received) helped me figure that out . I've used and continue to use 3 blades with great success: - Treet Carbon Blades -- haven't tried the "Greet" ones yet (I'm just picking on ordinaryshaver ....his typos are legendary, but that's only because he's very responsive. We all have our crosses to bear, mine is that I'm verbose, some might say loquacious -- and I like big words ). These are smooth shaving right out of the wrapper, but I don't feel like they last as long as my second blade. Some are put-off by the carbon, which means they will rust (quickly) if you don't dry them when you're done.
- GEM Stainless Steel (PTFE coated). Very sharp, but I find the first shave (and sometimes 2nd) harsh and apt to produce some mild irritation if I'm not very careful. Several folks have different methods for "taming" the blade before the first shave, I tend to just use a milder razor (usually my GEM Featherweight) versus something more aggressive. The shave itself seems to strop/calm the blade edge with the remaining shaves being very nice, and I've found this blade to be pretty long-lived.
- Pal Carbon (Blue Blades). I've only been able to try one of these, but it cuts as well and as smoothly as the Treets. They seem hard to come by (at least for me) as I haven't found a source for them.
I hope that helps. If you do accidentally use an industrial blade (i.e., made for a scraper), it's not the end of the world....I still have skin on my face; but it's not an experience I'm anxious to re-live.
Welcome to the forum!!! Keep on posting and asking questions, this is both a knowledgeable and friendly place!
Good information here. If you are looking for PAL by Personna carbon steel blades in quantity of 100 in a tray, the part # is 62-0177. If you search around and can wait for a decent price they can be had for around $12 shipped, what I paid a year or so ago. I like them better than the stainless steel coated blades. I find them sharper and more efficient. YMMV.

Industrial blades. You end up with 500 crap blades. I hope you have plenty of paint to strip.
